The simple present tense is the most basic form that must be mastered by second-semester students of the Islamic University Ogan Komering Ilir Kayuagung. In addition, students are also required to write paragraphs using the simple present tense based on the syllabus. However, most students still have difficulty using the simple present tense in writing paragraphs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the most dominant student errors in using the simple present tense. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The research subjects involved the second-semester students of English Language Education at the Islamic University of Ogan Komering Ilir Kayuagung. The research instruments used a written test. Based on the calculation, it was found that 56.89% error of misformation, 15.51% error of addition, 13.79% error of omission, and 13.79% error of misordering made by the students.
The purpose of this study was to investigate if POE (Predict, Observe, Explain) strategy influenced students' reading ability when reading an exposition text. This study was conducted using an experimental design. Purposive sampling was used to select the sample. The sample consisted of 42 students. The research instrument was a multiple-choice test with 40 questions about the exposition text. A t-test was used to analyze the data. Based on the independent sample t-test, the value of t- obtained was -6.793 at significance level p<0.005 in the two-tailed testing and df=40, the critical value of t-table was 2.0210. Since the value of t-obtain (-6.793) was higher than t-table (2.0210) and p-value (0.00) was less than the α value (0.05), it meant that Predict, Observe, Explain strategy helped students learn quickly to understand the content of the text.
Reading is an important skill that students need to comprehend and interpret the content of an English text. Teaching reading at the junior high school level aims to improve students' comprehension skills. The exposition text is one of the genres listed in the English curriculum for junior high school. It is also one of the more challenging genres for learners to grasp when it comes to text comprehension. The aim of this study was to discover students' difficulties in comprehending exposition text based on their reading comprehension level as determined by Barret's Taxonomy. This study was descriptive qualitative. The participant consisted of 42 students from Ponpes Bait Qur'an Kayuagung. The reading test in the form of multiple choice with 40 questions of exposition text was applied in this study as an instrument. Based on Barret's Taxonomy analysis, students' problems with exposition comprehension were linked to literal comprehension, reorganization, inference, evaluation, and appreciation. Hence, the POE strategy is recommended to address students' difficulties in comprehending exposition text.
The objective of the study was to find out whether or not there was a significant difference in reading comprehension achievement between the students who were taught by using Predict-O-Gram Strategy and that of those who were not. The method used in this study was a quasi-experimental method. The sample of the study was 54 students, which divided into two groups, namely experimental group (class VIII.B) and a control group (class VIII.C), each of them consisted of 27 students. To collect the data the written test was used in the form of multiple-choice. Before giving the test, the test was tried out to non sample students of the eighth grade students of MTs Subulussalam Kayuagung class VIII. A in order to know whether or not the test was valid and reliable for sample not. The data obtained were analyzed by t-test and the calculation was done with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) version 20. Based on the result of independent sample t-test, It found that there was a significant difference in reading comprehension achievement between the students who were taught by using Predict-O-Gram Strategy and that of those who were not.
