Universities worldwide are essential institutions to upgrade society. Recently, the University of Mosul underwent certain circumstances after the 2003 and 2016 times of wars that varied among urban expansion, renovation, and rebuild some affected or demolished buildings, roads, walkways, and sidewalks. Hereupon, this research aims at measuring students´ comfort walking. This research contributes by advocating mobility network development on the main Campus. Six components involved with comfort walking were addressed namely: personal preferences, connectivity, accessibility, safety, convenience, and attractiveness. The study focused on the main Campus. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were adopted in data collection and analysis including observation, photography techniques, and questionnaire survey.The sample of the study subjected the students who usually walk on the Campus. The findings reveal that the Campus generally gives the students a comfortable walking experience. Particularly, there is an agreement on connectivity aspects, moderate evaluation for accessibility aspects, agreement to some extent with safety aspects, moderate evaluation for convenience aspects, as well as attractiveness aspects. Besides, the findings indicate a requirement for further improvements especially in providing transportation services in the University for long distances, improving the physical elements, services, and facilities, which need more maintenance.
The concept of urban space is associated with society’s needs and behaviors. Since street is the first element of urban form space which defines the old city, it has been used for as multi-functional spaces to include gathering, meeting, shopping, work and enjoyment. However, regarding rapid development and changing in people needs, the street lose some of their functional and urban characteristics. Hence, this affect the street on being sustainable urban space. Accordingly, this paper examines the principles of sustainable urban place with eight factors: connectivity, accessibility, diversity and mixed land-use, attractiveness, comfort, safety, social environment, and liveliness. This fulfilled by conducting people’s opinions on these sustainable factors. The aim of this research is to make Sulaymaniyah city center a sustainable urban city. The research selected (5) main streets in Sulaimani city center as a case study including Mawlawi Street, Kawa Street, Saboonkaran Street, Goran Street (Orezdi), and Piramerd Street. The study employed 240 questionnaire Surveys that analyzed quantitatively using SPSS software. Besides, 20 interviews with lectures and professional architects that analyzed qualitatively. In addition, the study uses direct observation and photography techniques. The study concludes that it is difficult to consider Sulaimani City Center a sustainable urban city because it does not meet the principles of sustainability efficiently.
Architecture is considered one of the most significant human arts aims creativity in design. Therefore, it requires certain artistic skills and certain knowledge and perception from students. Architects are expected to have graphical communication skills enable them to translate their thoughts and ideas to sketching, drawing, model making, coloring, and rendering. The staff of first stage noticed the inadequate level of knowledge and shortfall in students' abilities throughout years of education. Therefore, this paper aims to explore artistic abilities and creativity perceptions for the enrolled architectural engineering students. The research focuses on the first-grade students in Architectural Engineering Departments of University of Mosul. Mixed approaches were adopted for data collection including two surveys and ten in-depth interviews with the students after one month from their enrollment in university. The survey includes 68 questions serve four main axes, particularly, explores personal characteristics and abilities, traces students' knowledge, investigates students' artistic abilities and creativity perceptions, and tackles the role of school in developing artistic abilities and creativity for students. Findings reveal lack of student's experience in artistic skills including sketching, drawing, or coloring, basic knowing about international or local architecture. This low qualification refers to underestimate art subject and lack of basic knowledge of architecture gained during students' secondary education.
