Management development is one of the critical capacity development areas in South Africa, more so in the wake of the vision of transformation of the country. In certain South African Universities, there is a challenge of promoting lecturers to managerial positions without any support of development. This paper reviews this practice particularly in the context of Universities of Technology. The findings reveal that universities in particular need to invest in its management development for purposes of sustainability and continuity.
Academic workload models provide framework for ensuring that academic workloads are distributed equitably and transparently. The models are also useful tools for managing capacity optimization and planning. The work of academics could be perceived as complex, individually distinctive and multidimensional. Therefore, the challenge in designing an acceptable model is striking the right balance between complexity and practical applicability.
This paper is an attempt at designing an academic workload model in the context of a developing University of Technology (UoT). Using actual hours modelling approach, a workload model that prioritises teaching and learning aspects of the work of academics is proposed.
Official sets of data from Statistics South Africa in the post-apartheid era suggest a general trend of rapidly increasing numbers of households against the population of individuals which is increasing at a decreasing growth-rate. Using multivariate statistical methods, this study investigates the interaction of demographic variables and their impact on the rapid increase in household numbers in South Africa. This study also examines the impact of the rapid increase of households to delivery of basic services. The results provide a scientific confirmation that the rapid increase could best be attributed to fragmentation of households. The paper recommends that the fast pace of household growth in South Africa should adequately be factored into household-based service delivery models of government at least to the next decade as the trend is expected to continue into the near future
Present and historic cooperate data provide the platform for deep interrogation of business processes with the aim of producing effective and timeous reports for management decisions. This study explores the abstract link between the successes and failures of strategic decision-making process and business intelligence as integral factors making significant impact on planned corporate destinations particularly in the logistics industry. The study advocates efficient business intelligence and strategic reporting systems for enhanced cooperate decision support.
