Speaking is one of the important skills in language learning. Speaking is the act, utterance or discourse of one who speaks. It also can be defined as an activity in giving and asking information as if dialoguing by two or more people. In speaking, there is a process of communication between speaker and listener. People put ideas into words, talking about perceptions and feeling they want other people to understand. The writer observed that most students are difficult to put ideas into word through communication in speaking English. To solve the problem, the writer conducted classroom action research, by implementing debate. The writer applied two cycles in this research. Each cycle consist of three meetings. The participant of this study was one class consists of 32 students. The instrument for collecting the data was speaking test, observation sheet and document. Based on the research result, showed the progressive mean of the students. The first meeting was 46,87, second meeting was 50,09, third meeting was 60,28, the fourth meeting was 65,12, the fifth meeting was 73,56 and the sixth meeting was 77,81. So, the mean in the second cycle was higher than the first cycle.It is indicated that the application of debate technique improve students’ speaking skill.
This study deals with the shift of addressing term of Mandailingnese society in Panyabungan. It employs qualitative research design with a case study. This study aims to describe: (1) the types of shift occur in the use of addressing terms by Mandailingnese speaker in Panyabungan, (2) the pattern of the shift of addressing term and (3) Reasons of Mandailingnese shift the addressing term in Panyabungan. The subjects were 20 respondent from second generation of parents group. The instruments used in this study were questionnaire and interview. The data was analyzed by Miles and Hubermans’ data analysis. There are fourteen respondent (70%) shif completely the addressing term in core family, two respondent (10%) shift partly the addressing term and four respondent (20%) maintain the addressing term. The shift of ddressing terms cover three types; ten respondents (50%) do not participate actively in the life of minority language, three respondents (15%) are not fluent in Mandailing language and seven respondents (35%) those are influenced by their parents to shift the addressing term. There are five patterns of the shift of addressing terms and three reasons why Mandailingnese society shift the addressing term; status of Indonesian language, social success and family tradition. Poda Na Lima is Angkola-Mandailing local wisdom means five advices which are used as a basis for the formation of islamic character of its people in their life. This local wisdom has dealt with islam such as to maintain cleanliness and purity both mentally and physically. This study explains about how Islamic character based on “Poda Na lima” local wisdom in Angkola-Mandailing community. The five basic values of Poda Na Lima are paias rohamu (the obligation to purify your hearth), paias pamatangmu (the obligation to purify your body), paias parabitonmu (the obligation to clean your clothes), paias bagasmu (the obligation to clean your house) and paias pakaranganmu (the obligation to clean the environment). This type of research was qualitative using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data collection techniques are done by observation, in-depth interviews and literature review that examines directly about Poda Na Lima. Data analysis used systematically starting from data collection, data presentation, data reduction to draw conclusions. The result of this study shows that those traditions were very important identities to of Angkola-Mandailing community particularly to perform a good character and personalities to build a clean and healthy community order. And also become a guideline and foundation of life held by every Angkola-Mandailing ethnic group in managing life.
Abstract. Mastering English is very urgent considering Indonesia as a developing country has crucial status in the worldwide consciousness both political, social, cultural, and economic. Hence, the ability of international connections has been attached to the official program of what children learn at school from fundamental to undergraduate students. The study aimed to implement English Language Immersion: Local Wisdom-Based Reading Material as a platform to resolve a solution and to find Naposo Nauli Bulung perception of this program. The target of the study was 90 Naposo Nauli Bulung, ranging in age from 12-25 years old who have not gotten married. They learn English based on local reading material which provides cross-cultural understanding and communicate more effectively in English as a foreign language. The research was a qualitative and quantitative method. The instruments of the study were interview guidelines, questionnaires, and observations. The process of English Language Immersion in Local Wisdom-Based Reading Material through four stages namely (Orientation, Preparation, Implementation, and Evaluation). According to the questionnaire results, 95% of respondents said the program is interesting, 95% said the immersion includes a component of local wisdom, 97% said the reading materials are simple to understand, 95% said each topic has a list of difficult words, 95% said the reading materials encourage readers to think critically, 95% said each topic contains tasks or assignments, and 96% said the program enables them to learn more about the people and culture.Keywords: English Language Immersion; local wisdom; reading material; EFLAbstrak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengimplementasikan English Language Immersion: Local Wisdom-Based Reading Material sebagai platform untuk menyelesaikan sebuah solusi dan mendapatkan persepsi Naposo Nauli Bulung terhadap program ini. Sasaran penelitian adalah 90 Naposo Nauli Bulung, berusia 12-25 tahun yang belum menikah. Mereka belajar bahasa Inggris berdasarkan bahan bacaan lokal yang memberikan pemahaman lintas budaya dan berkomunikasi lebih efektif dalam bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Instrumen penelitian berupa pedoman wawancara, angket, tes dan observasi. Proses English Language Immersion: Local Wisdom-Based Reading Material melalui empat tahapan yaitu (Orientasi, Persiapan, Pelaksanaan, dan Evaluasi). Dari hasil kuesioner yang diberikan, 95% menjawab program ini menarik, 95% menyatakan program ini mengandung unsur kearifan lokal, 97% mengatakan bahan bacaannya mudah dipahami, 95% menjawab setiap topik memiliki kosakata yang sulit, 95% menjawab bahan bacaan memungkinkan pembaca untuk berpikir secara mendalam, 95% mengatakan setiap topik berisi tugas atau latihan, dan 96% menyatakan bahwa program ini memungkinkan mereka untuk mendapatkan wawasan tentang budaya dan tradisi masyarakat setempat.Kata kunci: English Language Immersion; kearifan lokal; bahan bacaan; EFL
Gesture is a type of non-verbal communication that is very influential in teaching and learning activities and interactions between teachers and students. It is not only can convey the speakers’ intention more specifically and adequately, clarify the teaching instruction, encourage the students’ interest, maximize English teaching’s goal but also can help improve the students’ skill in speaking, writing, reading and listening . This study aims to improve students' speaking, writing, reading, listening and interest in English lessons through the use of gestures at SMA Negeri 1 Batang Natal.The method used was descriptive qualitative. The subjects were 2 teachers and 25 students of 11th grade of SMA Negeri 1 Batang Natal The research instruments used were interviews and observations. The results of this study suggests that the use of movement has positive and negative sides for students. The positive side is that the teacher must be able to use the right movements according to the needs of their students. Creating a comfortable atmosphere and considering the most effective method so that students are activated in participating the lessons. While negative side was using too many movements or being too serious when teaching would not create a comfortable classroom atmosphere.
