A good and appropriate learning process will motivate learners, and will eventually have an impact on improved learning outcomes. The researchers conducted an investigation into the influence of interest and motivation on learning outcomes of Korean Education Study Program students in a state university in Indonesia in the particular subject of Language and Art Appreciation. The compulsory subject is part of the faculty’s mission to cultivate literary and art appreciation of its students. A survey employing a Likert-based questionnaire consisting of 60 items was carried out, and documentary analysis was conducted to the students’ final exam grades in the subject of Language and Art Appreciation. The results show that interest and motivation had significant influence on students’ learning outcomes, as shown by their final exam grades in the subject. It can be concluded then that high level of interest and motivation determined the success of learning outcomes, especially in the subject of Language and Art Appreciation.
The representation of cultural values in textbooks is crucial to be examined because learning a foreign language is bound with the culture. Although previous research has quite extensively investigated this issue, much is yet to be explored in the context of Korean as a foreign language learning. This study aims to address the gap by investigating how cultural values are represented in the Korean as a foreign language (KFL) textbook, published by The Korea Foundation for Indonesians. A critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach was employed to analyze the data. The findings exhibited the representation of cultural values in four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The introduction to the Korean language could be given through cultural recognition. Among the identified cultural values in the textbook, the representation of showing respect to creative products or the results of local culture was more evident than the other categories, followed by showing respect to cultural differences from various ethnic or religious groups and merging with nature and life. However, the representation category of showing respect to indigenous people’s culture was not seen in the textbook. This suggests that the textbook is intended to foster the students’ multicultural awareness in learning Korean as a foreign language.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research which has a purpose to uncover the diplomatic representation of South Korea towards North Korea by using the study of assertive speech-act. The data of this research are speech videos of president Moon Jae-In taken from YouTube with its transcription and were carefully examined using speech-act classification that was suggested by Searle and Korean assertive speech-act verb classification proposed by Jang. Two international relations experts were also interviewed to strengthen the representation data in terms of its political implication.The result of this research shows that the assertive verb & function of 합의하다'habeuihada' (agreeing) dominates in President Moon Jae In's speeches. Based on the result of the interviews with international relations experts, the assertive speech acts of President Moon Jae In do represent the diplomatic state and attitude of the two Koreas, the benefits and the losses, as well as the influence of United States of America in the diplomacy done by South Korea towards North Korea.
