Engineering State is a week‐long program held at Utah State University each June. It is designed to introduce top high school students entering their senior year to the engineering field and the university experience, which includes learning to use a library. Initiated in 1990 by the civil engineering department, it expanded the following year to include additional departments within the College of Engineering. Although engineers are not typically strong library users, the civil engineering faculty felt a library component should be part of the students' Engineering State experience.
This paper presents the results of focus groups conducted by Utah academic librarians at branch campuses in Utah. Librarians met with distance learners on-site to gain insights into their informationseeking behavior and to learn if they are using library services. Students rely heavily on the Web for information and also utilize known resources in friends and family. Marketing and publicizing library services through classes and at the delivery sites is vital. Students appreciate the services libraries offer and strongly prefer face-to-face instruction and direct assistance from a librarian.
he Internet is full o f resources for those interested in distance education (DE). As with all subjects, information can be obtained using Internet search tools such as gopher, Veronica, Jughead, and WAIS. Using distance education/learning and adult education/learn ing, these searches reveal many interesting documents, sites, and databases. J. H. Ellsworth maintains a list called "Dr. E's Eclectic Compendium o f Electronic Re sources for Adult/Distance Education." This re source is available as part o f the University o f Michigan's Clearinghouse for Subject-Oriented Internet Resources Guides. Current access is through anonymous ftp and gopher. For the purpose o f this article, DE is de fined as any education taking place at a dis tance where a geographical separation exists between the instructor and the learner.
