High-school deputy headteachers in an authority employing four per school were surveyed, with follow-up interviews. The main issues studied were the use and value of job-descriptions, in relation to the separation of responsibilities among deputies, and the extent of role-conflict. The changing role of the deputy headteacher after comprehensive reorganisation in relation to Bumham's view of dual-leadership was examined. With the introduction of multiple deputy-headships it would seem that it is the deputies who are assuming task-instrumental responsibilities for the organisation of the school.
