Recent reports describe alarming trends of adolescent drug use and a lack of treatment for substance use disorder symptoms. Early efforts in adolescent treatment relied on adult models that may not have considered the unique needs of adolescents. Recently, there has been an increased emphasis in developing intervention models designed specifically for adolescents. This article provides descriptions of current approaches to adolescent substance abuse treatment and summaries of research assessing the effectiveness of these models.
Psychological/mediation intervention (PA/7), a form of single-session psychotherapy, is presented as a flexible approach suitable for use in a variety of situations involving interpersonal conflict. The dual objectives are first, resolution of the immediate conflict, and second, as a preventatiue measure, alteration of the interactional pattern that gave rise to the difficulties.PMI is contrasted with three types of increasingly used forms of mediationdivorce, issue centered, and neighborhood. The procedures of PMI, designed to meet the two objectives, are described and illustrated for each of its six stages.Mediation is a generic term used to describe approaches to the handling of human conflict in which an outside party (mediator) is invited to help others resolve their differences. The mediator, who remains neutral in the disputes, has no decisionmaking powers but, rather, works to promote cooperation between the disputants so they can develop what they consider to be suitable solutions.
