Soil solutions from old-growth lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) stands in western Wyoming differed from solutions beneath adjacent clearcuts where four residue disposal methods were applied. Soil solutions from clearcuts were more concentrated in sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and nitrate. All elements, especially, nitrates, were most concentrated under burned windrows of debris. Phenol concentrations under a mulch of wood chips were high during the first posttreatment year, and sometimes exceeded 1 milligram per liter. Dilution of potassium, nitrate, and phenol concentrations would be expected as water moves from the soil to streamflow.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
