Liquid-liquid equilibria (LLEs) data are reported for 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol + hexane, heptane, octane, decane, dodecane, and hexadecane mixtures between 274.5 K and the upper critical solution temperatures (UCSTs). The coexistence curves were determined visually. They have a rather horizontal top, and their symmetry depends on the size of the alkane. For systems with dodecane or hexadecane, they are skewed to the region of higher mole fractions of 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol. An opposite behavior is observed when hexane or heptane is involved. The (x 1 , T) data were fitted to the equation. T c and x 1C are the coordinates of the critical points fitted together with k, m, and R. Results are briefly discussed on the basis of the existence of inter-and intramolecular H-bonds as well as of dipole interactions, which occur in solutions containing hydroxyethers.
Although in recent years bone piezoelectricity has been normally neglected, lately a new interest has appeared to show the importance of bone piezoelectricity in wet bone's complex response to loading. Here we numerically study a problem, including a strain-adaptive bone remodelling and the piezoelectricity. Its variational formulation leads to a coupled system composed of two linear variational equations for displacements and electric potential, and a parabolic variational inequality for the apparent density. Fully discrete approximations are now introduced by using the finite element method to approximate spatial variable and the explicit Euler scheme to discretise time derivatives. Some a priori error estimates are proved and the linear convergence of the algorithm is deduced under additional regularity conditions. Finally, some one- and two-dimensional numerical simulations are described to show the accuracy of the proposed algorithm and the behaviour of the solution.
Groundwater resources are under stress in many regions of the world and the future water supply for many populations, particularly in the driest places on Earth, is threatened. Future climatic conditions and population growth are expected to intensify the problem. Understanding the factors that control groundwater storage variation is crucial to mitigate its adverse consequences. In this work, we apply satellite-based measurements of ground deformation over the Tertiary detritic aquifer of Madrid (TDAM), Central Spain, to infer the spatiotemporal evolution of water levels and estimate groundwater storage variations. Specifically, we use Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) data during the period 1992-2010 and piezometric time series on 19 well sites covering the period 1997-2010 to build groundwater level maps and quantify groundwater storage variations. Our results reveal that groundwater storage loss occurred in two different periods, 1992-1999 and 2005-2010 and was mainly concentrated in a region of ~200 km 2. The presence of more compressible materials in that region combined with a long continuous water extraction can explain this volumetric deficit. This study illustrates how the combination of PSI and piezometric data can be used to detect small aquifers affected by groundwater storage loss helping to improve their sustainable management.
