The social and cultural norms shape gender roles which sometimes deprive women of the opportunity to prepare for natural calamities. But the disastrous effect of natural disasters spares no one. It knows no gender. Most of the time, women more than men bear the worse of consequences. The study measures and describes the impact of disaster preparedness sessions on the perception of economically challenged women in Philippines. By using a mixed qualitative and quantitative research method the study found that: 1) the majority of women participants are willing to undergo training in disaster preparedness; 2) their awareness in disaster preparedness improved from "basic" to "high" level; 3) their level of action in disaster preparedness is still on the "planning stage" and; 4) the program effectively changed their attitude towards disaster preparedness and mitigation. The study provided insights on the potential of women in disaster preparedness toward a disaster resilient Filipino community.
Recent scientific consensus suggests that climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent and destructive. Consequently, increasing importance is given to disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) in global governance. The projected global warming at 1.5 ºC and the climate variability that the Philippine archipelago experiences make DRR-CCA the key priorities of both the national and local government units. In this study, we assessed and measured the degree of mainstreaming of DRR-CCA in the comprehensive development plans (CDPs) of the five component cities in the province of Nueva Ecija in the Philippines. These are among the areas in Central Luzon that are susceptible to hydrometeorological and geologic hazards. We distributed survey questionnaires to 25 employees of the local government units in the five component cities in Nueva Ecija who are directly involved in planning activities. We triangulated their responses using archival data (review of written policies and plans). The main findings of the study indicate that in spite the presence of laws and policies on DRR-CCA, their implementation is only in the preliminary stages. The results also provide insights to policymakers and future researchers on the challenges and opportunities influencing the systemic mainstreaming of DRR-CCA in the province.
This study measured and evaluated the effect of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) on the academic performance of the student-beneficiaries of Calaba National High School, Calaba, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija in the Philippines. Survey questionnaires were distributed to ninety five 4Ps student beneficiaries who were purposively selected based on the following criteria: 4Ps beneficiary, enrolled in Calaba National High School at the time of data gathering, and willingness to participate in the study. Analysis of all collected data revealed the significant effect of the program to the performance of student beneficiaries especially in motivating students to attend classes. The result also supports Vroom’s Expectancy Theory which assumes that the students’ efforts, performance, and behavior are influenced by the importance they place on the desired outcome. In this case, to satisfy the conditionalities and remain eligible for the cash grant which have positive effect on the socio-economic status of their family. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended that the scope of the program be extended especially that two years have been added to the secondary education; livelihood programs be intensified to provide family-beneficiaries with additional income; and for the concerned agencies and authorities to review the existing budget and disbursement schemes to prevent delay in the release of grants. The increase in the school attendance of students and the diminished drop-out rate indicates the program’s positive effect on the lives of the beneficiaries.
This study described the benefits of the Malasakit Center based on the perspectives and experiences of patients of Eduardo L. Joson Memorial Hospital. It employed mixed research methods and interviews as the primary data collection tool. Most of the respondents are male and within the age bracket of 30 to 39 years old. All the participants reflected a positive response to Malasakit Center, as it lessened the burden of producing documentary evidences to avail of the services. A procedure observed prior to implementing the Malasakit program. This study also focuses on how the Center made the service more accessible. The principle of shared responsibility is the key to harmony and cooperation between recognized employees’ union and management of the university. This study was conducted to analyze the attitude of the members of Wesleyan University Philippines-Faculty and Staff Association (WUPFSA) towards their union. Through the use of descriptive correlational research method, survey questionnaires, interviews, and cross-examination of secondary data, the study was able to: a) describe variables such association-demographic profile of the members, employees’ attitude towards union’s role, as well as problems encountered through the years; and b) determine the significant relationship between the socio-demographic profile of the employees and their attitude towards the association. The study also found out that the positive attitude of the employees towards the union is attributable to the commitment of the officers in the discharge of their duties and responsibilities. The positive attitude of members towards the management not only strengthens the union but also promotes peace and harmony within the educational milieu significantly boosting the morale of employees and generating activities which fosters academic excellence.
