This article deals with the ideology represented by newspaper editorials. It is from the idea that every language use is never neutral and not ideology-free. Language is used to convey meanings in a broad sense. There are meanings related to the opinions through the language as resources of evaluation. Editorial is one practice of language use full of opinions towards a certain issue on people or things. Sydney Morning Herald and Herald Sun are used as both Australian newspaper posit themselves as the high-rank newspaper in terms of circulation and online accessed. This article tries to uncover the ideologies represented by both newspaper editorials concerning death penalty of Bali Nine executed in Indonesia. Attitudinal perspective proposed by Martin and White (2005) in term of affect, judgement, and appreciation of language appraisal is used to explore ideology in the newspaper. From appraisal analysis, it is found that Indonesia dominantly appraised in negative There is no positive appreciation for Indonesia in both newspaper editorials. judgement while Australia is portrayed in positive view for the issue of death penalty in Indonesia.
Male and female often have their own language features that are also appear on the use of language in a movie. Lead male and female characters in A Star Is Born have their language features. This study is to discuss the language features in the movie and factors which underlie the occurrence of the language features. This is a qualitative study in which the data of this study are in the form of utterances produced by lead male and female characters in A Star Is Born movie. The data were collected by using a non-participant observation method and analyzed from the perspectives of Lakoff (1973) and Xia (2013) on language features, and Holmes (2013) on social factors. The result of the study shows that there are differences and similarities of lead male and female characters in using language. Both lead male and female characters use adjective feature to express their feeling and utilize swear word to show their emotion. Subsequently, in inviting each other, lead male character utilizes rising intonation, while lead female uses super polite form. Besides, in opening a show, the lead male character uses lexical hedges and fillers, while lead female applies super polite form. Nonetheless, the lead male character is inclined to use adverb and lexical hedges and filler in his utterance, while the lead female does not utilize those features. The occurrences of the language features in the lead characters are influenced by participants, setting, topic, and function.
This study concerns with the use of lexical density in Reader’s Digest Magazine. This study used quantitative method. In collecting data, the writer used the document method. The source of data of this research is the lexical items and grammatical items in Reader’s Digest Magazine. In analyzing the data, the writer used lexical density theory by Ure. The source of data of this research is the lexical items and grammatical items in Reader’s Digest Magazine. The result of the lexical density shows there are health article with density around 61, 34%, animal kingdom article with density around 61,56%, languages article with density around 58, 83%, parenting article with density around 54, 68%, and travel article with density around 64, 05%. In EFL settings, in mastering English Language students do not merely study on rule of the language but more on communicative purposes. So, they need more practices using English in the classroom and a teacher has to lead students to always practice English. From the four competences, i.e. linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic competences, they must be integrated to lead students achieve the communicative competence. Authentic materials are not created specifically to be used in the classroom and the use of authentic materials that can be obtained from the materials in surrounding daily life can reinforce the direct relationship between the language classroom and the outside world for the students. It helps students involve in the real language as long as teachers provide them with educational support.
