The immersion of the flipped classroom teaching model in blended and online language learning is indispensable. The purpose of this study was to propose improvement in critical thinking in reading through the flipped classroom teaching model of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners in higher education. A quasi-experimental design was used to improve reading skills based on the framework of critical thinking for critical reading with a paired t-test of pre-test and post-test. The participants were 37 second-semester students in the English for Academic Purposes class. The results show that the flipped classroom teaching model enhanced students’ critical thinking for critical reading in the aspects of accuracy, clarity, precision, depth, relevance, and logic from the mean score of the pre-tests (12.4865) to the post-tests (18.3243). Students had a positive perception of the implementation of this model in terms of self-directed learning. This study implies that critical thinking for critical reading skills needs supportive teaching and learning environment that can allow students to have self-study prior to the class so that online learning can be effective to synergize the application of flipped classrooms with critical thinking skills in reading.
Amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic, most higher education institutions have shifted to online learning to sustain the existence of the universities. However, the readiness and effectiveness of private higher education institutions in Indonesia, especially in Kalimantan, are still questionable. This study focused on analyzing and understanding the academic technology experience and preference for online learning in Indonesian higher education institutions from the students' perspectives. A survey of 302 respondents from private higher education institutions was corroborated with semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that the majority of the respondents have limited access to technology devices and ownership. Most of them need academic features integrated into the learning management system for their successful study. The majority of the respondents preferred to have a completely face-to-face class, but they are receptive to online learning. However, they need to get situated in academic situations that facilitate their technology literacies and skills. Also, the institutions and lecturers should go in the same direction. Therefore, the data sources can contribute meaningful insights for policy-makers to design accessible and adaptive online learning for the students.
The aim of this research was to gain deeper understanding concerning English teacher's difficulties in designing lesson plan based on the 2013 Curriculum. This qualitative case study employed observation, interview and document analysis. The instruments of collecting data consisted of observation checklists, an interview guide and field notes. The subject was one English teacher at SMP Negeri X Singkawang who has implemented the 2013 Curriculum. This research revealed that English teacher encountered difficulties in designing lesson plan based on 2013 curriculum on three stages. In pre design stage, the teacher found the difficulties in term of inability to formulate and design lesson plan due to limited time constraints. In whilst design stage, the English teacher experienced difficulties in assessment with many variables. In post-design stage, the English teacher coped with students’ reluctance in the teaching learning proces since the learning process was not appropriate with the lesson plan and lacked of facilities at school. It is recommended that the teacher should put more efforts to improve professional competencies by participating in activities such as training and workshop and accelerate knowledge improvement, creativity and technology to be able to apply the 2013 curriculum effectively.

Assisted technology has become one of the primary needs for inclusive education, especially for language learning. Language learning mediated by technology can provide affordances to EFL learners with low English language skills. Therefore, an assisted technology with content-language integrated learning was developed with the ADDIE approach to producing meaningful and motivational language learning with a dual focus, namely content and language. The materials presented in the assisted technology were developed stick to the Line-of-Sight by the Branch model (2009), which covers needs, goals, strategies, and assessment. The technology and material development result were named assisted technology-enhanced language learning (ATELL) and created with a marker-based augmented reality application. The AR application is an assisted technology for reading comprehension skills that guide the students in critical thinking for critical reading activities. The findings of the study show that students who read with the AR application performed better than those who read with the traditional method. The students also reported that they have a positive perception of the integration of the AR application for language learning for several attributes such as technology interactivity, compatibility, learning ambience, and cognitive condition.
