In this study, we explore context-aware cross-device interactions between a smartphone and smartwatch. We present 24 contexts, and then examine and prioritize suitable user interfaces (UIs) for each. In addition, we present example applications, including a map, notification management system, multitasking application, music player, and video chat application, each of which has its own context-aware UIs. To support these context-aware UIs, we investigate the performance of our context recognizer in which recognition is based on machine-learning using the accelerometers in a smartphone and smartwatch. We conduct seven different evaluations using four machine-learning algorithms: J48 decision tree, sequential minimal optimization (SMO)-based support vector machine (SVM), random forest, and multilayer perceptron. With each algorithm, we conduct a long-interval experiment to examine the level of accuracy at which each context is recognized using data previously collected for training. The results show that SMO-based SVM is suitable for recognizing the 24 contexts considered in this study.
Allelochemicals are organic compounds exuded from the roots of plants, which have autotoxic effects on plant growth. In this study, the decomposition of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (DCBA), an allelochemical of cucumber, by plasma generated in an air bubble in solution is examined, and the influence of plasma treatment of the solution on cucumber growth in a hydroponics system is investigated. Air gas is injected into water through a vertically positioned glass tube, into which a high-voltage wire electrode is placed to generate plasma. The concentration of DCBA decreases and the concentration of chloride ion produced by the dichlorination of DCBA increases with increasing discharge treatment time. Consequently, most DCBA has decomposed after 24 h of treatment. The discharge-treated solution is used as a nutrient solution for cultivating cucumber plants in a rockwool hydroponic system. The results show that the growth of most plants is inhibited by adding DCBA, as well as by the decrease in pH during discharge treatment; in contrast, plants subjected to discharge treatment with pH adjustment grow healthily.
Primary gastric undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a rare disease with insufficient long-term follow-up data. In the present study, a 70-year-old male complained of abdominal fullness and visited our hospital.Abdominal computed tomography revealed a large tumor in the upper part of the stomach, which was accompanied by smaller tumors in the small intestinal mesentery. An endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy examination of the gastric tumor revealed features of pleomorphic sarcoma and high-grade spindle-shaped cells. Total gastrectomy was performed on the primary tumor, together with combined resection of the small intestine for the metastatic tumors. However, the tumor recurred in the mesentery of the sigmoid colon 6 months after the operation. A second operation was performed to resect the recurrent tumor. Since the second surgical procedure, the patient has remained free from recurrence for >7 years. Although the prognosis of abdominal UPS was considered to be poor, even after curative surgery, the present case experienced a long-term survival of gastric UPS after undergoing surgical resection alone.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
