Scanning tunneling microscope ͑STM͒-excited molecular fluorescence from H 2 TBP porphyrin ͑H 2 TBPP͒ thin films on Au ͑111͒, Ag, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite ͑HOPG͒, and indium tin oxide ͑ITO͒ surfaces has been investigated in air. Molecular fluorescence was observed from the H 2 TBPP films on Au and Ag, but it was extremely weak or undetectable from films on HOPG and ITO. The maximum intensity of molecular fluorescence from H 2 TBPP/ Ag is at least 100 times stronger than that from H 2 TBPP/ HOPG. Strong enhancement of molecular excitation by substrate surface plasmons is suggested for the STM-excited molecular fluorescence from H 2 TBPP only on the noble metal substrates.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
