Epidemiology ! The most significant consequences of diabetic foot problems are ulcerations and amputations. ▶ Between 0.8 and 10 % of all people with diabetes mellitus suffer from a foot ulcer. ▶ The annual rate of new diabetic foot cases is between 2.2 and 5.9 %. ▶ Germany is in the upper range of European countries with its rate of over 60 000 amputations per year. Approximately 70 % of all amputations are performed on patients with diabetes mellitus.
Risk Factors! Foot lesions in diabetics are a result of a multi-factor process with the following causative factors.
