Physiology of a child is much different from an adult and a child should not be considered a small-sized adult. They have different developmental pharmacokinetics due to which they are more sensitive to drug effects. This has led to the adoption of new dental materials derived from natural origin instead of conventional chemicals to reduce the side effects and complications. Propolis is one such natural substance that is widely used for various clinical trials in dentistry and has shown very promising results. Due to its anti-inflammatory, anticariogenic, and immunomodulating effects, it has now become quite familiar material in dental applications. It is eco-friendly, economical, complications free, easily available, and easy to use in daily dental practices. Hence, it has opened a new field of research and analysis for scientists and researchers.
In the present scenario when the whole world is fighting against the deadly COVID-19 virus, oral health of children is of great concern for the pediatric dentists. Children are now unwillingly locked inside their home and as a result they are in continuous habit of frequent food intake which is giving rise to various oral health issues. Various researches have also suggested children may play role as asymptomatic carrier of the infection and may lead to further spread of infection, but mortality rate is very negligible. So it is important to provide preventive measures for children for better oral health with minimal intervention and by remote information and education of caregivers and by using teledentistry. Moreover it is of utmost importance to follow the protective protocols while treating the child patients in the dental clinic to prevent cross-infection. This review is aimed at providing information regarding management of pediatric dental patients in midst of ongoing pandemic by following necessary protocols and preventive measures to prevent spread of COVID-19.
Pulpotomy is one of the most common treatment modalities in pediatric dentistry where amputation of only coronal pulp is done. Radicular pulp remain untouched and treated with long term clinically successful medicaments such as formocresol, glutaraldehyde, ferric sulphate etc. The success of pulpotomy depends on assessment of the pulp and the technique. Due to the availability of newer material nowadays pulp regeneration can also be done.
