The importance of vocabulary, its types, selection criteria, size and depth, and teaching principles were found unclear. The present article seeks to respond to such challenge. To achieve the mentioned goals, we did a systematic review to previously related studies and theories. The results showed that the vocabulary was found to be more functional as a basis for communication, a reflection of social reality, emotion booster, and academic ability predictor. It also revealed that its contribution to the basic language skills varied. Finally, the principles of teaching vocabulary, size and depth, and teaching and learning vocabulary materials (TLVMs) appeared to be associated with student’s vocabulary mastery. This article addresses an objective description and reasons for the student’s motivation in reading English text. Sixty students of tenth grade at SMA Negeri 55 South Jakarta participated on filling in 50 statements of 11 domains of motivation. An interview, another method to collect data needed and to meet a methodological triangulation, was employed to capture the participants’ perspective. Findings revealed that reading curiosity is the highest domain of the students’ motivation (92.22%), and social reason for reading is the lowest one (55.56%). Some interpretations are included in this paper.
This research is addresses language functional and lexical acquisition domains of souvenir seller in Bawomataluo village, South Nias, North Sumatera. The reasons of lexical items acquired by souvenir seller is regarded as the function of language acquisition. On the contrary, form and process of lexical items acquired are totally viewed as language lexical domains. To obtain the whole accurate data of these research problems interview and observation were conducted. The research finding indicates four specified language lexical acquisition reasons: internal motivation, external motivation, access to native speaker and experience. In addition, eight English part of speech are acquired.It is discovered that lexical items acquired are dominated by noun. Verb and adjective posites at the next level of the amount of lexicals acquired. Adverb, conjunction, pronoun are less acquired. Interjection is more easily acquired by souvenir sellers. The processes involved to acquire the lexical consist of social, memory, compensation, and affective process. Finally, the research finding is thoroughly expected to be language teacher's consideration in employing material selection and determining natural, contextual and situational language teaching model. Language leaners are highly advised to recall the language competence theoretically mastered in naturall setting in attempt to obtain practical competence. Abstrak Artikel ini berfokus pada deskripsi domain fungsional dan leksikal pemerolehan bahasa penjual sovenir di desa Bawomataluo, Nias Selatan, Sumatera Utara. Alasan pemerolehan leksikal bahasa Inggris merupakan fungsi pemerolehan bagi partisipan. Sedangkan, bentuk dan proses pemerolehanya dipandang sebagai domain leksikal bahasa. Untuk memperoleh data penelitian ini, dua jenis instrumen yang telah digunakan, yakni wawancara dan observasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan empat alasan atau fungsi pemerolehan leksikal bahasa:motivasi internal,motivasi eksternal, akses terhadap penutur pertama bahasa Inggris dan pengalaman. Ada delapan jenis leksikal Bahasa Inggris yang diperoleh. Kelas kata nomina lebih dominan dikuasai, dan selanjuntnya diikuti oleh kelas kata verba dan adjektiva. Kelas kata keterangan, konjungsi, kata ganti merupakan kata yang kurang dikuasai. Kata interjeksi paling mudah dikuasai oleh penjual sovenir. Ada empat proses pemerolehanya: sosial, pengahafalan, kompensasi, dan afektif. Pada akhirnya, temuan penelitian secara menyeluruh diharapkan menjadi pertimbangan guru bahasa da-lam memilih bahan ajar dan menentukan model pengajaran bahasa yang alami, kontekstual, dan situasional. Pembelajar bahasa sangat disarankan untuk mengingat kompetensi bahasa secara teori-tis dan menguasai latar alami dalam upaya untuk mendapatkan kompetensi praktis. A debatable consensus on and appropriate approaches to literature review function as the theoretical background of the paper. It redefines the literature review substance, synthesis, and procedure to literature matrix, and literature review assessment. In addition, some implications are to interpret the discussion. Finally, finding of the present study is applicable to any study fields at it generally provides matrix for which writing literature review can be easily conducted. Suggestions, identical to the potential of further studies and its application by on-going researcher and writer, are holistically provided.
This action research was conducted to improve the students’ English vocabulary mastery by using picture. To achieve the objective, data were collected through the test, questionnaire and observation from 21 students in third graders of SDN Karawang Kulon II. The outcomes of the research showed that students’ vocabulary mastery got improved. This improvement is seen from the mean score of the test, i.e. 56.19 (Pre-test I), 81.90 (Post-test II), and 94.29 (Post-test II). Additionally, the result of questionnaire on the vocabulary teaching applying picture also shows the positive changes. The above data indicates that vocabulary picture can be effective media for vocabulary learning English. However, it is expected that other researchers could conduct similar researches on the related issues to develop it.
