The creation of the Canarian Councils was the first establishment of the Castilian municipal system outside of mainland Spain. Among these Islands’ institutions, La Palma and Tenerife had the peculiarity of sharing a governing council throughout the centuries-long existence of the combination of island-as-municipality. The present article examines the post of “Justicia Mayor” in La Palma by means of a quantitative analysis of the Libros de Actas del Cabildo de La Palma, delving into the governor’s presence on the island and the importance to the territory of his lieutenant.
The study analyses the creation of the Juzgado de Indias and the problems that arise between the first Official of the new institution, Francisco de Vera, and the Cabildo of La Palma, despite the determination with which the local government defended the establishment of the institution on the island, because it was the monopolistic control of commercial traffic between Canary Islands and America. For this work, we use as primary sources the Acts of the Cabildo de La Palma between 1559 and 1599 and the royal papers included in the Archivo General de Indias.

One way to commemorate the legacy of an intellectual —in this case, that of the historian Elías Serra Ràfols— is to reflect on the imprint of his contribution and probe his presence today, when five decades have passed since his death. There are many ways to verify his impact as a researcher in historiography and the validity of many of his postulates, contributions, methodology, human values... We have opted, as a complement to the article by Blanca Divassón and Javier Soler, for a questionnaire submitted to the opinion of a varied list of young historians, because they are the ones who have in their hands the present and the medium-term future of historiographical work on the Canary Islands.
