Many blame partisan news media for polarization in America. This paper examines the effects of liberal, conservative, and centrist news on affective and attitude polarization. To this end, we rely on two studies that combine two-wave panel surveys (N1 = 303, N2 = 904) with twelve months worth of web browsing data submitted by the same participants comprising roughly thirty-eight million visits. We identify news exposure using an extensive list of news domains and develop a machine learning classifier to identify exposure to political news within these domains. The results offer a robust pattern of null findings. Exposure to partisan and centrist news websites—no matter if it is congenial or crosscutting—does not enhance polarization. These null effects also emerge among strong and weak partisans as well as Democrats and Republicans alike. We argue that these null results accurately portray the reality of limited effects of news in the “real world.” Politics and partisan news account for a small fraction of citizens’ online activities, less than 2 percent in our trace data, and are nearly unnoticeable in the overall information and communication ecology of most individuals.
We propose a fiber-optic-plasmonic hybrid device that is based on a corrugation-assisted metal-coated angled fiber facet (CA-MCAFF) for wavelength-dependent off-axis directional beaming (WODB). The device breaks into two key structures: One is the MCAFF structure, which is a modified Kretschmann configuration implemented onto a fiber platform, thereby being able to generate a unidirectional surface plasmon with dramatically enhanced properties in terms of non-confined diffracted radiation loss and operational bandwidth. The other is the periodic corrugation structure put on the MCAFF, thereby enabling WODB functionality out of the whole structures. The corrugated metal surface out-couples the surface plasmon mode to free-space optical radiation into a direction that varies with the wavelength of the optical radiation with excellent linearity. We perform extensive numerical investigations based on the finite-element-method and analyze the out-coupling efficiency (OCEout) and spectral bandwidth (SBout) of the proposed device for various designs and conditions. We determine the seven structural parameters of the device via taking sequential optimization steps. We deduce two optimal conditions particularly for the fiber-facet angle, in terms of the averaged OCEout or the SBout in the whole visible wavelength range (400 - 700 nm), which eventually leads to OCEout = 30.4% and SBout = 230 nm or to OCEout = 24.5% and SBout = 245 nm, respectively. These results suggest substantial enhancements in both OCEout and SBout, in comparison with the performance properties of a typical nano-slit-based device having a similar type of WODB functionality. The proposed CA-MCAFF is a simple, compact and efficient WODB device that is fully compatible with the state-of-the-art optical fiber technology.
Random lasers have distinct advantages to be the nextgeneration light sources owing to their simple fabrication process, high flexibility in shape and size, and unique optical characteristics, such as low spatial coherence, high intensity, and multi-directionality. In this paper, we discuss how to realize random lasing with a high degree of circular dichroism with the aid of chiral plasmonic gold nanoparticles. The extinction dissymmetry factor of the chemically synthesized chiral plasmonic gold nanoparticles is measured to be −0.11 at its peak wavelength of 575 nm. The lasing properties and luminescence dissymmetry factor of the emission of the random laser are measured and characterized. An optimal inclusion of the chiral plasmonic gold nanoparticles to an ethylene glycol solution of rhodamine 6G laser dye molecules mixed with dielectric titanium dioxide nanoparticles eventually results in the laser emission having a considerably high level of asymmetry between the right-and left-handed circularly polarized light, yielding a luminescence dissymmetry factor of 0.20−0.23. This study paves the way for the development of a random laser of a high degree of circular dichroism in a highly flexible compact form through a simple, massproductive fabrication process, inviting numerous potential applications in nano-photonics.
This study was aimed to solve the problems of current national genetic evaluation systems in Korea and its development to pass the verification processes as required by International Bull Evaluation Service (Interbull). This will enable Korea to participate in international genetic evaluation program. A total of 1,416,589 test-day milk records with calving dates used in this study were collected by National Agricultural Cooperative Federation from 2001 to 2009. Parity was limited up to fifth calving and milk production records were adjusted to cumulative 305 day lactation. The pedigree consisted of 2,279,741 animals where 2,467 bulls had 535,409 parents. A newly developed multiple trait model was used in calculation of breeding values for milk yield, milk fat, and protein yield. Data were edited with SAS (version 9.2) and R programs, and genetic parameters were estimated using VCE 6.0. Results showed a continuous increase in genetic potentials, in general, and no remarkable differences were found between performances by parity. Except fat yield, potentials in milk yield and protein yield were well calculated. We found an increased number of daughters per each top ranked 1,000 bulls in recent years of calf births compared to the cases of previous evaluations. Of the bulls ranked top 100 by our new models (multiple-trait models) we found that increased numbers of bulls were included. Of twenty eight bulls born in 2006, twenty bulls born in 2007 and eight bulls born in 2008 that were listed by new models, only 23, 12, and 2 bulls born in respective years were represented on top 100 by old single-trait models. Re-ranking of the daughters or sires by multiple-trait models suggest that this new multiple trait approach should be used for dairy cattle genetic evaluation and seed-stock selection in the future to increase the accuracy of multiple trait selection. Breeding values for these traits should also be calculated by new method for international genetic evaluation.
