This study attempts to predict how long a newly listed corporation, usually termed initial public offering (IPO), will survive on the equity listing market. The three-fold contribution of this study comprises a hand-collected and substantially expanded dataset for listed IPOs (1990–2017) over a maximum tracking period of 31 years (1990–2020) to predict the IPO survival on emerging Malaysian capital market, the rationale and consequences for unifying the two listing boards (Main Board and Second Board) in 2009, and an investigation of the predictive role of ex ante strategic prospectus information as early warning signals for sustainable survival of Malaysian IPOs. We also make comparisons for the survival profile of IPOs listed on different listing equity boards. We use Cox proportional hazard (PH) model to estimate the empirical results because of the cohort research design of the study. Overall empirical results show that survival curves for IPOs listed on Main Board and Second Board were not statistically different. However, Second Board IPOs remained more vulnerable to hazard. The survival curves for IPOs listed on Main Market and ACE Market are statistically different. Empirical results reveal that high share premium, high listed capital, and longer firm age at listing date significantly increase the survival (reduce hazard) of IPOs listed on the Main Market and the Second Board. However, bigger firm size and elevated risk factors significantly reduce the survival (increase hazard) of the listed IPOs mentioned above. However, share premium is the only variable that has a negative and significant correlation with IPO survival on ACE Market. These results have implications for the regulators, prospective investors, and policymakers of emerging markets, where the IPO prospectus disclosures bridge the information asymmetry gap prevailing due to the nonexistence of public information prior to the IPO. Empirical findings of this study can be generalized to other developing and emerging markets where IPO prospectus substantially mitigates information asymmetry and ex ante strategic firm characteristics act as early warning signals in predicting IPO survival.
The study tests the Fama and French three-factor model by using the newly created Islamic equity style indices. Based on a dataset from May 2006 to April 2011, the three-factor model is tested based on returns of Islamic unit trust funds using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) methodology. The sample period is also divided between periods before and after the Global Financial Crisis in August 2008 to test for robustness, and the Bai and Perron ( 2003) multiple structural break test was used to determine the structural break in the series. The analysis shows that the Fama and French model is valid for Islamic unit trust funds before and after the collapse of Lehman Brothers. The result further indicates the reversal of size effect. As for trading strategies, value funds outperform growth funds by annualized 3.13 percent for the full period. During pre-crisis period, value funds perform better than growth funds while in post-crisis, size factor yields better return than other strategies. As policy suggestion, fund managers need to be aware of the reversal of size effect, and they need to ensure a more transparent stock selection process so that investors can make an informed decision in their asset allocation.
This study contributes to the growing debate on the relation between varying stock market conditions and the profitability of stock market anomalies. We investigate the effect of changed market conditions on time-varying contrarian profitability in order to examine the presence of the Adaptive Market Hypothesis (AMH) in South Asian emerging stock markets. The empirical findings reveal that a strong contrarian effect holds in all the emerging markets. We also find the stock return opportunities vary over time based on contrarian portfolios. We show that contrarian returns strengthen during the down state of market, higher volatility and crises periods, particularly during the Asian financial crisis. Interestingly, the market state instead of market volatility is the primary predictor of contrarian payoffs, which contradicts the findings of developed markets. We argue that the linkage arises from structural and psychological differences in emerging markets that produce unique intuitions regarding stock market anomalies returns. The overall findings on the time-varying contrarian returns in this study provide partial support to AMH. Another significant outcome of this study implies that investors in South Asian emerging markets, like investors in the developed markets, could not adapt to evolving market conditions. Therefore, contrarian profits often exist, and persistent weak-form market inefficiencies prevail in these markets.
