Sepsis is a systemic infection defined as "life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection". "Septic shock is a subset of sepsis with circulatory and cellular/ metabolic dysfunction associated with a higher risk of mortality" by sepsis surviving campaign (SSC). 1 The sepsis and septic shock burden on healthcare is extensive, estimated according to the recent publication in 2017 as 48.9 million cases and 11 million sepsis-related deaths worldwide, accounting for 19.7% of all global deaths. Costing more than the US $ 24 billion annually. 2 Despite the advancements in the knowledge regarding the pathophysiology, organism, haemodynamic monitoring tools, resuscitation measures, sepsis is one of the significant causes of morbidity and mortality of critically ill patients, requiring early management with appropriate agents to survive sepsis. 3 A global effort in terms of the early diagnosis, timely and appropriate clinical management of sepsis, such as appropriate antibiotic selection based on the local susceptibility pattern is necessary to boost the therapeutic management because of its high burden on society and mortality rate. 4
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
