The objective of this study was to utilize agro-lignocellulosic wastes for growing oyster mushroom which become problematic for disposal. Pleurotus ostreatus was cultivated on five agro-industrial wastes: rice straw (RS), wheat straw (WS), corncobs (CC), saw dust and rice husk @ 3:1 (SR) and sugarcane bagasse (SB). Approximately 500 g sized polypropylene bags (20.32 × 30.48 cm) were used for each substrate. The SR significantly improved the number of fruiting body (27.80), size of the fruiting body (5.39 g), yield (115.13 g/packet), ash and shortened the days for stimulation to primordial initiation and harvest (9.2 days). The maximum percentage of visual mycelium growth with the least time (15.0 days) to complete the mycelium running was found in SB, whereas the highest biological efficiency value (56.5) was calculated in SR. The topmost value of total sugar (33.20%) and ash (10.87 g/100 g) were recorded in WS, whereas the utmost amount of protein (6.87 mg/100 g) and total polyphenolics (196.88 mg GAE/100 g) were detected from SB and SR, respectively. Overall SR gave the highest amount of the fruiting body with the topmost polyphenols and ash, moderate protein and total sugar, and secured maximum biological efficiency too. The results demonstrate that saw dust with rice husk could be used as an easy alternative substrate for oyster mushroom cultivation.
The single-node explant of rose cvs. 'Bianca' and 'El Torro' were cultured in in vitro conditions to investigate the influences of different cytokinins in the multiplication and subsequent rooting phases. The in vitro growth of explant was affected by the type of cytokinins used in the culture media. The best results regarding shoot proliferation was found in the medium containing 8.87 µM BA. Although 2-iP (8.87 µM) showed the better response in shoot elongation but due to their lower multiplication ability, it cannot ensure rapid micropropagation in rose cvs. 'Bianca' and 'El Torro'. In addition, kinetin (8.87 µM) had virtually no effect on multiplication phase. Although, higher concentration of BA proliferated maximum shoots per culture but there were a risk of hyperhydricity symptom in plantlets. One milligram per liter BA was found the best medium in shoot multiplication phase by securing the good proliferation rate, greater shoot elongation, maximum number of leaves and highest fresh and moderate percentage of dry weight per culture. But 1.0 mg LG 1 BA could not maintain the best performance in the rooting phase. On the other hand, 2.0 mg LG 1 BA was found to be optimum concentration for better formation of longer roots and can be recommended for rooting of rose cvs. 'Bianca' and 'El Torro'. Regarding the rose cultivars tested in the experiments, 'Bianca' showed the higher response in both multiplication and rooting phases than 'El Torro'.
Two plant growth regulators: β-NOA (50 and 80 ppm) and GA (200 and 250 ppm) were applied to emasculated flowers at anthesis to set parthenocarpic fruit, while in the control treatment fruit set was achieved by natural pollination. The application of β-NOA found ineffective in setting parthenocarpic guava. No significant differences were observed in the length and diameter of fruit between parthenocarpic and naturally pollinated seeded fruit at different days after anthesis. The mean fruit weight, TSS and ascorbic acid content of parthenocarpic fruit were similar to that of seeded fruit. Significant higher amount of total polyphenol was detected in the seeded fruit than the parthenocarpic fruit. Although 200 ppm GA showed comparatively better response to fruit growth, TSS and ascorbic acid content than 250 ppm GA but not in a statistical level.
The experiment was carried out at the Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, Bangladesh to evaluate the rate of seeds germination and early seedlings growth of tomato under different levels of salinity. Experimental treatments consisted on five levels of natrium chloride (NaCl) (0, 25, 50, 100 and 150 mM). Seeds of tomato cv. BINA Tomato-10 were placed on Petri dishes for germination. Data on germination percentage, germination coefficient, length of radicle and plumule, fresh and dry mass of radicle and plumule, seed vigor index were recorded at different days after sowing. NaCl solutions significantly affected seed germination and growth of germinated seedlings. At 11 DAS, the highest seed germination (94.67%), maximum germination coefficient (15.91), longest radicle (7.61 cm) and plumule (5.77 cm), maximum seed vigor index (1266.34), highest fresh and dry mass of radicle (12.5 mg and 1.63 mg) and plumule (23.95 mg and 1.02 mg) were recorded in control treatment. High concentration of salt solution (150 mM NaCl) found to be detrimental for seed germination and seedling growth. BINA Tomato-10 can be recommended for the area having moderate level of salinity.
