Abstract. We propose a multi-expert restoration scheme to address the model drift problem in online tracking. In the proposed scheme, a tracker and its historical snapshots constitute an expert ensemble, where the best expert is selected to restore the current tracker when needed based on a minimum entropy criterion, so as to correct undesirable model updates. The base tracker in our formulation exploits an online SVM on a budget algorithm and an explicit feature mapping method for efficient model update and inference. In experiments, our tracking method achieves substantially better overall performance than 32 trackers on a benchmark dataset of 50 video sequences under various evaluation settings. In addition, in experiments with a newly collected dataset of challenging sequences, we show that the proposed multi-expert restoration scheme significantly improves the robustness of our base tracker, especially in scenarios with frequent occlusions and repetitive appearance variations.
We introduce a data-driven approach for unsupervised video retargeting that translates content from one domain to another while preserving the style native to a domain, i.e., if contents of John Oliver's speech were to be transferred to Stephen Colbert, then the generated content/speech should be in Stephen Colbert's style. Our approach combines both spatial and temporal information along with adversarial losses for content translation and style preservation. In this work, we first study the advantages of using spatiotemporal constraints over spatial constraints for effective retargeting. We then demonstrate the proposed approach for the problems where information in both space and time matters such as face-to-face translation, flower-to-flower, wind and cloud synthesis, sunrise and sunset.
In this work we improve training of temporal deep models to better learn activity progression for activity detection and early detection tasks. Conventionally, when training a Recurrent Neural Network, specifically a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) model, the training loss only considers classification error. However, we argue that the detection score of the correct activity category, or the detection score margin between the correct and incorrect categories, should be monotonically non-decreasing as the model observes more of the activity. We design novel ranking losses that directly penalize the model on violation of such monotonicities, which are used together with classification loss in training of LSTM models. Evaluation on ActivityNet shows significant benefits of the proposed ranking losses in both activity detection and early detection tasks.
We study the problem of Salient Object Subitizing, i.e. predicting the existence and the number of salient objects in an image using holistic cues. This task is inspired by the ability of people to quickly and accurately identify the number of items within the subitizing range (1-4). To this end, we present a salient object subitizing image dataset of about 14K everyday images which are annotated using an online crowdsourcing marketplace. We show that using an end-to-end trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, we achieve prediction accuracy comparable to human performance in identifying images with zero or one salient object. For images with multiple salient objects, our model also provides significantly better than chance performance without requiring any localization process. Moreover, we propose a method to improve the training of the CNN subitizing model by leveraging synthetic images. In experiments, we demonstrate the accuracy and generalizability of our CNN subitizing model and its applications in salient object detection and image retrieval.
