Objective: The upward trends in the prevalence and control of hypertension in Chinese adults have been described, but recent trends based on the most recent guidelines are unavailable. We examined recent trends in the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension among Chinese adults from 1991 to 2015 based on the 2018 Chinese Guideline. Methods: A total of 72 452 adults aged 20–79 years from the China Health and Nutrition Survey conducted between 1991 and 2015 were included in the study. Hypertension status and control rate were defined according to the 2018 Chinese Guideline. Age-standardized estimates were calculated based on the age distribution of the WHO standard population. Results: From 1991 to 2015, the crude/age-standardized hypertension prevalence (14.0/15.3 to 34.1/25.6%), awareness (29.4/24.2 to 43.8/27.2%), treatment (19.2/15.1 to 39.2/23.6%) and control rates (3.5/3.6 to 13.8/8.4%) increased (all P for trend <0.001). The prevalence of hypertension increased at a greater rate in rural regions compared with that in urban regions, whereas the control rate was higher in urban regions than that in rural regions. Compared with middle-aged and older adults aged 40–79 years, young adults aged 20–39 years had a larger increase in the prevalence of hypertension, but the awareness, treatment and control rates in the young adults did not increase. Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension has increased markedly over the past two decades among Chinese adults, and the awareness, treatment and control rates have increased slightly or moderately and they have remained very low. These data underscore the need for effective measures to prevent hypertension and to increase the control of hypertension in Chinese adults.
ObjectivesThe prevalence of general overweight and obesity defined by body mass index criteria has greatly increased in Chinese children and adolescents in recent decades. However, few studies have considered the trend in abdominal obesity in Chinese children and adolescents. This study aimed to examine the secular trends in waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and the prevalence of abdominal obesity among Chinese children and adolescents aged 6–17 years from 1993 to 2015.MethodsA total of 11,985 children and adolescents aged 6–17 years participated in the China Health and Nutrition Survey, a continuous cross-sectional survey, conducted from 1993 to 2015. Abdominal obesity was defined as WC≥age- and sex-specific 90th percentile based on the reference from Chinese children and adolescents or WHtR≥0.50.ResultsAfter adjustment for age, sex and region, mean WC increased from 60.27 cm in 1993 to 64.31 cm in 2015 (p for trend <0.001), and mean WHtR increased from 0.430 to 0.434 (p for trend <0.05). The prevalence of abdominal obesity defined by WC reference increased from 5.0% in 1993 to 19.3% in 2015 and defined by WHtR reference increased from 6.4% in 1993 to 14.5% in 2015 (p for trend <0.001).ConclusionsThe prevalence of abdominal obesity among Chinese children and adolescents aged 6–17 years has increased between 1993 and 2015.
Background: No studies have assessed the association between change in weight status and subclinical cardiovascular outcomes in children. Objective: To examine the association of change in weight status over 2 years with carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) among Chinese children. Methods: A total of 1184 children aged 6-11 years at baseline with complete data were included, and there were 1073 children after excluding those with cIMT ≥ sexand age-specific 90th percentile values at baseline. Overweight (including obesity) at baseline or follow-up was defined by criteria for overweight and obesity for Chinese school-aged children and adolescents. High cIMT at follow-up was defined as cIMT ≥ age-and sex-specific 90th percentile based on the study population at follow-up.Results: Compared with children who were in persistent normal-weight group, those in the incident or persistent overweight groups had higher cIMT change
