To evaluate the quality of life after surgery for benign neoplastic disease of the parotid gland. Forty-nine patients who underwent surgery for benign parotid disease between January 2004 and December 2008 were included in this retrospective study. EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-H&N35 questionnaires were used to determine the quality of life. The variables of these questionnaires were compared with age, gender, educational status, histopathologic diagnosis and Frey syndrome. A statistically significant correlation was noted between the female gender and post-surgical pain, sleeplessness and the use of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (p < 0.001). There was a significant difference between age and difficulties in moving the mouth (p < 0.001). Frey syndrome related to social functions, economical difficulties, speech defect, reduced sexuality, and nutritional parameters were found to be statistically significant (p < 0.001). Frey syndrome is the most common complication that affects the quality of life in patients who had parotidectomy due to a benign parotid disease. Therefore, all patients should be informed about Frey syndrome before parotidectomy.
Vitamins B, E and C and L-carnitine appear to reduce cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats. The use of such additional treatments to decrease cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in humans is still under discussion.
Cisplatin is a common chemotherapeutic agent used in many solid and hematologic malignancies. The main unwanted effect of cisplatin is ototoxicity, for which no standard treatment has been reported. The present study examined the protective efficacy of resveratrol on cisplatin-dependent ototoxicity through an experimental model. Fifteen rats were randomized into three groups. Group 1 (control group) (n = 5) received intraperitoneal (i.p.) 15 mg/kg cisplatin; group 2 (resveratrol group) (n = 5) received i.p. 100 mg/kg resveratrol, followed by i.p. 15 mg/kg cisplatin; group 3 (n = 5) served as a vehicle group and received i.p. 1 ml dimethyl sulfoxide. All rats underwent the auditory brainstem response (ABR) test before and 72 h after the treatment. Pretreatment ABR values of the groups were not significantly different. The pretreatment hearing threshold values of the groups were 30 ± 6.60 and 28.5 ± 5.29 dB in groups 1 and 2, respectively (p > 0.05). The post-ABR-I and post-ABR-IV values were, respectively, 1.41 ± 0.18 and 5.83 ± 0.16 ms in the control subjects and 1.19 ± 0.22 and 4.58 ± 0.27 ms in the study group. The ABR-I and ABR-IV durations in rats treated with resveratrol were significantly shorter (p < 0.01). A comparison of threshold values shows that the resveratrol-treated rats had significantly lower values than the control rats. After cisplatin injection, ABR I-IV intervals were compared among the groups. The ABR I-IV interval duration was 4.42 ± 0.16 ms in the control group, while the resveratrol-treated rats showed a significantly shorter ABR I-IV interval duration of 3.49 ± 0.27 ms (p < 0.001). Resveratrol attenuated cisplatin-dependent inner-ear damage, as shown by the ABR-I, ABR-IV, ABR I-IV interval, and hearing threshold values. Our results suggest that this natural antioxidant may be effectively used in reducing the unwanted effects of cisplatin on the ear physiology of patients, particularly those undergoing chemotherapy.
<b><i>Background:</i></b> Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and swallowing difficulties may occur as the disease progresses. Dysphagia has many consequences, such as aspiration and pneumonia. In particular, in the advanced stage, approximately 70% of the causes of death in AD involve aspiration pneumonia. Therefore, it is vital to assess the presence or absence of dysphagia in AD. <b><i>Objective:</i></b> This study aims to describe swallowing difficulty across the stages of AD. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Thirty-five AD patients were evaluated. The Mini-Mental State Examination was conducted. A bedside water swallow test (BWST) and the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) were administered. Finally, fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing was used to evaluate residual, aspiration and penetration conditions. <b><i>Results:</i></b> EAT-10 scores, BWST results, and penetration-aspiration status were statistically significantly different according to AD stage (<i>p</i> < 0.05). Among all patients, 74.3% had residue, 25.7% had penetration, and 2.9% had aspiration. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> This study has demonstrated that swallowing dysfunction begins at a mild stage and progressively worsens toward the advanced stage in patients with AD. At all stages of AD, residue was observed, and this poses a risk for the development of penetration-aspiration. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the early dysphagia of individuals.
Cisplatin is an effective chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of several types of malignant solid tumors but its clinical use is associated with ototoxicity. In the present study, we investigated the effect of selenium administration on lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde [MDA]) and cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats. Healthy wistar albino rats (n = 21) were randomly divided into 3 groups: control (C), cisplatin (Cis), cisplatin and selenium (Cis+Se). Cisplatin was administered for 3 days to Cis and Cis+Se groups. Cis+Se group received selenium 5 days before cisplatin injection and continued for 11 consecutive days. Hearing thresholds and lipid peroxidation (MDA) levels of the rats were recorded before injections and at the end of experimental protocol. The cochleas of animals were harvested for histologic and immunuhistochemical examinations. In biochemichal analyses, pretreatment with selenium prevented the elevation of MDA levels in Cis+Se group rats. Moreover, animals in Cis+Se group had better hearing threshold levels than animals in cis group. Samples obtained from the animals in Cis group revealed extensive loss of the normal microarchitecture of the organ of Corti. On the other hand, animals in Cis+Se group exhibited a preservation of the morphology of the organ of Corti and outer hair cells. In the immunohistochemical examinations of cochlear tissues stained with anti-caspase-3, a higher degree of immunopositivity was found in the Cis group. When Cis+Se group and Cis group were compared, significantly less immunopositivity occurred in the Cis+Se group (P < 0.05). Thus, it appears that pretreatment with selenium may reduce cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats.
