This article analyzes various issues related to a professional society's having greater influence on governmental, societal, and global issues. Analysis of association/society missions and goals, support for enhanced connections with other groups and collaboration to other disciplines through scholarly research projects, plus greater relevance and impact of scholarly inquiry on societal and global issues is presented. However, association/society influence is marginalized unless there is enhanced support by university leadership and faculty of a new or expanded view of scholarly inquiry. One possibility in gaining support or recognition by colleagues, government, community, and society is through a name change that reflects expanded mission and goals, plus a grants program which identifies with Boyer's model of expanded academic scholarship and impact.
This article is a review of the literature on ministry transfel: Observations are included from different parts of the world. The review begins with a general overview of ministry transfeK followed by a presentation of the advantages of transfers. Then economics and missiodchurch structure are discussed as to their influence on the transfer of ministries. Several observers prefer partnership rather than ministry transfer; their views are also included, The reader will notice that this literature review comes from an evangelical perspective, which reflects Estes ' background, and that nearly all the authors cited are evangelicals.nce, an Argentine church leader said to me, "Ministries in Argentina should reflect the mate culture and not the Coca Cola culture" (Estes 200956). He 0 was using mate, a Paraguayan tea popular in Argentina, to refer to the Argentine way of life, and Coca Cola to refer to the North American way of life (Estes 20093-56). Clearly transferring ministries to national control is an important step toward making ministries blend into the national context. But ministry transfers can also involve considerable challenges. Another Argentinean told me, "The Christian education ministry has been transferred to the nationals. But the building that houses that ministry needs extensive repairs. We nationals do not have the resources to make the repairs and this is a serious problem" (Estes 2009:lOO; the details of this quote being modified to protect the anonymity of my informant). The transfer of missionary ministries to nationals is complex and can create advantages as well as dilemmas. The purpose of this literature review is to show how evangelical thinkers have grappled with the complexities of ministry transfer and give field workers food for thought on how to deal with this issue. For my purposes, a ministry transfer refers to a change in leadership and financial support. In view here would be a ministry that was previously run by foreign personnel and financially supported by foreign funds. It should be quickly added that not all missionary ministries start that way. Some begin with expatriate personnel and national Steven Estes has served as a missionary to Argentina for 29 years with Worldventure.
