In the present study the microbial biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by secondary metabolites of Streptomyces sp. SS2 in an eco-friendly approach has been reported. The Streptomyces sp. SS2 was isolated from the soil sediment of Similipal Biosphere Reserve. The identification of this strain was determined by phenotypical characteristics (morphological and biochemical) and molecular characterization method using 16 s rDNA sequencing. The morphological study was also done by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. The preliminary characterization of biosynthesized silver nanoparticle was carried out using UV-Vis spectrum analysis, which showed an absorption peak at 420 nm corresponding to plasmon absorption of silver. The average size and charge (zeta potential) of the particles were found to be 67.95 ± 18.52 nm and -17.7 ± 5.30 mV, respectively. The functional groups were identified by FTIR studies and their morphology (round and spherical shape) was determined by scanning electron microscopy. The synthesized AgNPs exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (MTCC 1089), Bacillus subtilis (MTCC 7164), Staphylococcus epidermis (MTCC 3615), Vibrio cholerae (MTCC 3904) and Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 1144). These biotechnological approaches of synthesis of nanoparticles can direct a new path in biomaterial sciences and enrich biomedical applications.
Coprological examination of 416 bovine faecal samples revealed the presence of parasitic stages of Toxocara vitulorum, strongyles, Strongyloides spp., Fasciola spp., amphistomes, coccidia (Eimeria spp. and Cryptosporidium spp.) and Buxtonella sulcata. About 42 % (n = 302) faecal samples from cattle and 36 % (n = 114) samples from buffaloes were positive for gastrointestinal (GI) parasitic infections. Both cattle (14.57 %) and buffalo (15.79 %) had the highest incidence of Buxtonella sulcata, respectively. The overall incidence of GI parasitic infections in young animals (below 1 year) was higher followed by older (more than 5 years) and adult animals (1-5 years) and the difference was statistically significant (p \ 0.05). Non descriptive breeds of bovines showed more parasitic infections than pure breeds, the difference being statistically non-significant (p [ 0.05). Season wise GI parasitic infections were recorded to be non-significantly (p [ 0.05) higher in monsoon (48.38 %) followed by summer (39 %) and winter (34.61 %) in cattle. There was no significant variation of GI infections in buffaloes in relation to season though highest prevalence was documented in monsoon (44.89 %) followed by winter (35.71 %) and summer (24.32 %). Similarly, sex wise females recorded higher infection rates than males in bovines and the difference being statistically non-significant (p [ 0.05).
The objective of the present study was to investigate the curative and antioxidative efficacy of ivermectin and ivermectin + vitamin E-selenium, and the influence of these agents on oxidative stress parameters in canines infested by Sarcoptes scabiei. Twenty two sarcoptic mites infested dogs and nine healthy dogs of 6 months to 2 years of age were divided into three groups. Group I comprised of healthy dogs (n=9) whereas animals in group II (n=11) and III (n=11) were positive for scabies. Group II animals were treated with only 1% ivermectin @ 0.2 mg/kg SC whereas group III were additionally treated with Vitamin E and selenium (tocopherol 50 mg + Se 1.5 mg/ml) @ 0.5 ml/20 kg IM at weekly intervals for three times. Blood samples were collected on day 0 and 28 post therapy. The values for hemato-biochemical parameters and activities of antioxidant enzymes were significantly decreased (P<0.05) whereas level of lipid peroxidation was significantly increased in all the infested dogs in comparison to the healthy dogs on day 0 which approached normalcy by day 28 post therapy. The dogs of group III showed better clinical recovery in comparison to group II at the end of therapy. Thus, administration of vitamin E and selenium in addition to standard therapy can alleviate these alterations hastening the clinical recovery of diseased dogs and can be recommended as an adjunct therapy with miticides for canine sarcoptic mange.
