This Masters dissertation consists of a theoretical articulation and seeks to elaborate some considerations on the ownership of the body by the subject and on the constitution and maintenance of the ego. Therefore, it follows bordering the tattoo, based on, mainly, Freud and Lacan's conceptualizations about the body, the subject and the ego. The body is discussed in its registres: Real, Symbolic and Imaginary, and the concepts of inscription, trace and letter are introduced, paving the ground to, later, circunscribe the tattoo in this registers. This work starts form the contemporary idea of body to discuss the act of getting oneself tattoed, taking it under a singular form. It is concluded that, this act may refer to a form of language chat points to subjectivity, working under the service of the identitary search and circunscribing itself on the Symbolic registre. It may also presente itself as an attempt to make border to nameless anguishes, circunscribing itself in the Imaginary registre. Nevertheless, it is on the Real that the tattoo is highlighted. Considered an hybrid between trace and letter, the tattoo aproaches to formations of the unconscious and, for chat, borrowing concepts form Allouch, is transcribed in the flesh and is not subjectible of translation, only of transliteration.
Psychoanalysis has always addressed issues concerning the body. More recently, the proliferation of practices of aesthetic body intervention such as plastic surgery, piercings and tattoos have been calling the attention of psychoanalysts to their use and effects on the subject. This paper focuses on the analysis of the role of tattoos in reclaiming one’s body, which will be approached through the psychoanalytical discourse analysis of data retrieved from online magazines and blogs. The practice of tattooing has subjective implications on the relationship between the body and the self, revealing a fundamental trace of human beings: the need to process traumatic events and give them some sort of tolerable expression.
