Extracts of adult organs contain an inhibitor of transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) methylases which is absent from extracts of foetal organs. An enzyme, tRNA N*-guanine monomethylase, can be freed of the inhibitor by precipitation at pH 5 . The inhibitor-free enzyme has an enhanced rate and capacity for methylation of a standard substrate.
