The facile, time and cost efficient and environmental benign approach has been developed for the preparation of Nickel (Ni)-Cobalt (Co) alloy nanowires filled multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with the aid of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN)/Ni-Co catalyst. The controlled incorporation of Ni-Co nanostructures in the three dimensional (3D) pore structures of MSN yielded the catalytically active system for the MWCNT growth. The inner surface of MWCNTs was quasi-continuously filled with face-centered cubic (fcc) structured Ni-Co nanowires. The as-prepared nanostructures were exploited as non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor probes for the reliable detection of glucose. The electrochemical measurements illustrated that the fabricated sensor exhibited an excellent electrochemical performance toward glucose oxidation with a high sensitivity of 0.695 mA mM−1 cm−2, low detection limit of 1.2 μM, a wide linear range from 5 μM–10 mM and good selectivity. The unprecedented electrochemical performances obtained for the prepared nanocomposite are purely attributed to the synergistic effects of Ni-Co nanowires and MWCNTs. The constructed facile, selective and sensitive glucose sensor has also endowed its reliability in analyzing the human serum samples, which wide opened the new findings for exploring the novel nanostructures based glucose sensor devices with affordable cost and good stability.

Three-dimensional flowerlike nickel cobalt sulfide (NiCo 2 S 4 ) nanostructures are electrochemically deposited over the Ni-modified cellulose filter paper (CFP). The fabricated NiCo 2 S 4 /Ni/CFP is explored as a binder-free and self-standing electrode for enzyme-free electrochemical detection of glucose in alkaline media, in which Ni/CFP and NiCo 2 S 4 serve as the current collector and active material, respectively. Owing to the rich redox active sites, synergistic effect between Co 4+ and Ni 3+ , and rapid electron transportation tuned with the substitution of sulfur (S) with oxygen labile functional group, NiCo 2 S 4 /Ni/CFP exhibits considerable enzyme-free glucose-sensing performance with wide linear glucose concentration ranging from 0.5 μM to 6 mM, high sensitivity of 283 μA mM −1 cm −2 , and low detection limit of 50 nM. The developed NiCo 2 S 4 /Ni/CFP's sensing performances are reproducible, stable, and highly selective toward the analyte of interest in physiological interfering species. Thus, the self-standing, binder-free, inexpensive, easily disposable, and facile electrode fabrication process proposed in this study opens a new paradigm architecture for the development of efficient electrochemical sensor devices with affordable cost.

[6] Recently, palladium (Pd) nanostructures have emerged as a promising EG oxidation catalyst in alkaline media, eliminating the necessity of the Pt nanocatalyst for EG oxidation. [7] However, Pd nanocatalysts are prone to rapid deterioration under surface poisoning and instability. [8] The formation of bimetals with non-precious transition metals (PdM, M = Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, Mo, Sn, etc.) is an efficient strategy to improve the stability without sacrificing the catalytic activity. [9] The oxophilic nickel (Ni) is recognized as a naturally abundant metal with enhanced corrosion resistance. [10] The inclusion of Ni into the crystal lattice of Pd facilitates active sites for -OH adsorption (OH ads ) and weakens their interaction with reaction intermediates adsorbed onto the Pd surface. [10,11] In parallel, metal nanoparticles decorated on carbon supports have also been shown to improve EG oxidation via their high electrical conductivity and catalytic activity. [12] The 3D porous structure of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) could considerably control the aggregation or stacking of the adjacent subunits, facilitating a uniform distribution of metal nanoparticles and increasing the number of accessible reactive sites for catalytic surface reactions. [13] However, the conventional strategy used for the fabrication of metal nanoparticles anchored onto CNTs involves strenuous multistep procedures, and the acidification process involved distorts the interconnected conduction channels, which consequently limits the EG oxidation kinetics. [14] Hence, the development of catalytically active metal nanoparticles encased within the graphitic layers of CNTs is highly desirable. [15] The mass transfer capability and catalytic activity of carbon nanostructures could be further improved with the development of porosity and heteroatom doping into the carbon skeleton.
