This research aims to identify the effectiveness of gamification in learning Arabic Cohesive Devices. Gamification refers to the application of game mechanics in non-game environments with the aim of enhancing the enacted processes and the experience of its participants. The researcher used the qualitative descriptive approach and distributed the questionnaire using a survey method to 50 first- and second-year students from the University Sains Islam Malaysia. The questionnaire was distributed to the sample members through Google Form. Then, the researcher collected the data and used SPSS to analyze it and extract the arithmetic means and standard deviations. From the search results, Gamification has a positive effect on students in higher education, especially in learning a foreign language, and through it, the process of learning Arabic Cohesive Devices increases the students' motivation. Finally, gamification provides the opportunity for learners to engage with content in an effective, informal learning environment.
Documentary film is a language input which is based on writing skills since it consists of the introduction to subject, presentation of ideas, and conclusion of subject. Many studies have highlighted the linguistic, informational, and pedagogical purposes of documentary film in language classrooms as the processing of written texts is required before the production of a documentary film. Although documentary film has a strong relationship with writing skills and having access to these authentic materials are very easy, some educators ignore these authentic inputs. Thus this paper investigates the importance of using documentary film in enhancing the learning of Arabic as a second language with specific focus on writing skills. In addition, this paper examines local experts’ views on the utilization of documentary film in the Arabic as a second language classroom. A set of questionnaire with both open and closed-ended questions were distributed among twelve experts in the field of Arabic as a second language in Malaysian public universities. Feedbacks from the experts were collected and analyzed. The findings indicated strong recommendations from Arabic language experts in Malaysia. Among the recommendations are the types of documentary films to be utilized, the categories of writing skills that can be developed, and the appropriate instructional techniques to be used in the classroom. In general, this study hopes to contribute to the field of Arabic teaching language skills to non-native speakers and a useful reference for curriculum designers, ministry officials, textbook authors, and teachers.
The objectives of this paper are three folds: firstly, to highlight the studies which have used documentary film as authentic input in teaching second language skills, secondly to review the studies which have used documentary film in enhancing the second language writing skill, and lastly to offer ways to deal with documentary film in improving Arabic as a Second Language (ASL) writing skill.For this purpose, the paper analyses related literature review and previous studies in the field. The literature review shows the concern of second language practitioners as well as scholars in the field in using documentary film in the learning process. However, studies related to ASL are very scarce. There are four steps to be adopted for the purpose of linking documentary film input with enhancing writing skills output. The usage of herbal medicinal is still the widespread among society today in their daily lives. This is mostly due to the tradition of our ancestors who really relied on traditional medicine to cure diseases and improve their intelligence. Next, herbal plants are said to have more and better nutrients and nourishment than modern medicine. This is because the compound have been mixed with the use of other chemicals to produce medicines. Centella asiatica (pegaga) is an herbal plant that is commonly heard about its benefits both internally and externally. However, scientific research is needed to prove its benefits. Thus, the society do not clarified much on the actual nutrients thoroughly. Besides that, Centella asiatica is generally known to come from the Apiaceae family and this plant is an important plant with a wide range of traditional, medicinal and therapeutic values. This plant has it own speciality or strong point in which it is choosen to be mentioned in the Quran. To prove its efficacy, a spectroscopy analysis of Centella asiatica extract was performed using ATR-FTIR. The use of Centella asiatica samples has also been diversified into leaf part and stem part. This is to compare the nutrient content in the leaves. The results from this research is that Centella asiatica leaves do have antimicrobial compound. Therefore, the usage of Centella asiatica leaves in society needs to be expanded so that its nutrients can be utilized to the maximum for the benefit of the people and improvement to the national economy.
The usage of gender, or muzakkar and muannath, in the Al-Quran is still one of the active discussions nowadays. However, there are still no available studies or analysis being conducted for muzakkar and muannath in sura at-Takwir. Therefore, this study is designed to analyse the categories of muzakkar and muannath of kawniyyat words in sura at-Takwir. Sura at-Takwir, which contains 139 words, is analysed qualitatively by using content analysis and categorising the kawniyyat words into four categories; muzakkar haqiqiyy, muzakkar majaziyy, muannath haqiqiyyy and muannath majaziy. It has been found that there is a total of 79 nouns in sura at-Takwir, with 20 of them are kawniyyat words. Among these 20 kawniyyat words, one word is categorised as muzakkar haqiqiyy, 6 words categorised as muzakkar majaziyy, 3 words in muannath haqiqiyy, and 10 words are categorised as muannath majaziyy. All in all, this study is expected to increase the understanding and knowledge in linguistic studies in the Al-Quran.
