Ethics is attracting increasing attention in management circles of both the public and private sector organizations.
This paper carries out an empirical study on how personal factors such as job satisfaction and organizational
commitment and organizational factors such as code of ethics and rewards will shape managers behavior and
subsequently influence their intentions pertaining to the making of ethical decisions. The primary data was
gathered from 42 private oil and gas companies in Terengganu by using questionnaires. This exploratory study
found that job satisfaction, organizational commitment, codes of ethics and rewards significantly influenced
ethical decision making of managers in oil and gas based companies. The findings support previous studies which reported that there is a positive link between ethical values and personal and organizational factors. Future
research should also take into account personal factors such as security of tenure when carrying out a similar
research
In recent times, the Malaysian public has expressed fears of increasing crime rate. However, the authorities have tried to dispel public fears by stating that crime rate has actually taken a dip and public worry is more a matter of perception rather than a fear caused by a real and genuine basis. The police point out that there will be a time gap between reduction of crime rate and a raise in public confidence as public confidence does not go up immediately when there has been an improvement in the crime situation. This paper investigated the level of fear of the public pertaining to being a victim of crime. Additionally, this paper investigated the factors that influenced the public opinion of the police such as police effectiveness in combating crime, corruption, brutality and personal links between police and the public. It is essential that the public should have a positive perception of the police force so that the force may be able to count on public cooperation in their efforts to combat crime and maintain public order. A sample size of 407 was taken for this study. The sample was stratified according to age groups and the level of education. It was found that most of the educated members from urban areas were not happy with the police as they felt that the police could be more effective in combating crime. This group also registered a higher fear level of being a crime victim. Fear of becoming a crime victim amongst the respondents. The respondents also felt that the recently repealed Emergency Ordinance (EO) which enables detention without trial should be reinstated. The public also felt that the police need more formidable intelligence gathering and the courts should mete out heavier punishment
In tandem with educational best practices the world over, School-based assessments (SBAs) were introduced in Malaysia in 2012 for secondary one students. This study investigated quantitatively and qualitatively matters such as the teachers' knowledge of SBAs and the issues faced when implementing SBAs. Whereas the factors contributing to the problems of SBA implementation was investigated only qualitatively. A sample of 60 English teachers in the district of Dungun, Terengganu, who were involved in SBAs from the beginning was used, out of this, 20 teachers were interviewed to obtain qualitative findings. It was found that teachers had satisfactory knowledge of planning an SBA tailored lesson. They also showed satisfactory knowledge of developing SBAs but appeared to have difficulty in the psychometrics of test analysis. As for issues faced by teachers, they were not indifferent to SBA implementation but team work and collaboration among SBA teachers needs to be improved. Teachers faced problems in SBA implementation but overall had a positive attitude towards SBA. Teachers voiced concerns over the lack of adequate staff numbers, lack of uniformity and a possible element of biasness in grading. Teachers also faced time constraints, lack of effective materials and methodologies and poor ICT facilities in schools. They also feared cheating by students in SBAs. Future researchers should investigate the success of SBA implementation after a few years.
This study investigated the students' perception of the importance of English language amongst a sample of 150 Upper Six students from a population of 755 students from six schools in the district of Marang, Terengganu. Also studied was whether their attitude towards learning English language is positive and whether they receive sufficient parental encouragement and support in their English language learning. It was found that the students were well aware of the importance of English language and also had a very positive attitude towards English Language learning. The parental encouragement and support scores also recorded a high total mean. In all three instances the sample means were well above the mid-point means indicating that the sample means fell in the higher halves of the mean scores. This implies that students are well aware of the importance of English language, are very positive about learning English language and receive more than adequate parental encouragement and support in their English language learning. Correlation analysis showed that there was a significant and positive relationship between the students' perception of the importance of English language and their attitude towards learning the language. Since the students' attitude and parental encouragement and support seem to be satisfactory, future researchers should investigate whether the curriculum offered is suitable for rural students.
With the rise of digital evolution as a new approach to teaching and learning, coupled with the current COVID-19 global pandemic where students are granted enormous autonomy throughout their learning process, the need for students to develop self-regulated learning (SRL) skills is even more urgent. Moreover, extensive studies found that the current global pandemic has impacted students’ motivation for learning, particularly when information technology infrastructure and facilities are lacking and social support from lecturers and peers is limited. This study was carried out to explore the relationship between students’ motivational beliefs and self-regulated learning. The study adopted a quantitative study involving 142 students. An analysis of the survey adapted from Pintrich and De Groot (1990) reveals that there is a highly positive and significant association between motivational beliefs and self-regulated learning. The study acknowledges collaborative learning as a recent intervention in improving students’ learning experiences. As such, it is recommended that future research can explore how collaborative learning excites students’ SRL skills and strategies, particularly in the post-pandemic period.
