Personality characteristics and emotional experiences contain both descriptive and evaluative aspects. The purpose of the present study was to test whether evaluation was a mediator in two well-established personality-emotion relationships. Using structural equation modeling procedures with two samples of participants, the authors demonstrated that evaluation fully mediated the relationship between neuroticism and negative affect and partially mediated the relationship between extraversion and positive affect. The results suggest that both description and evaluation components are essential to understanding the complex relationships between personality and emotion.
American Psychological Association membership has declined by over 10% since 2008 despite growing numbers of psychology degrees awarded. Most APA divisions contracted: two by >30%. We examined membership trends in APA and its divisions; changing membership demographics; competition for members among clinical and scientific specialty groups; changing climates in academia, research, and practice; and the impact of technology. Diverse factors contribute to APA's and divisions' challenge to recruit and retain members. Reinvigorating their status as scientific and professional organizations may require realigning mission, priorities, resource allocations, communications, and activities to appeal to and reinforce the trust of psychologists, and demonstrate how they serve the needs of most psychologists. This may require revising APA's governance structure, policies, and operations to meet the profession's challenges and guide its future.
Medication nonadherence is a vexing problem in health care necessitating patients and health professionals' efforts to prevent, minimize, or reverse it. Research participants' inconsistent medication taking obscures treatment efficacy and adds costs to biomedical research. Electronic monitoring devices (EMDs), like the Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS), have grown in sophistication, providing precise, timely insights into individuals' medication-taking patterns across clinical populations. This article reports on the desirability and feasibility study of using a wireless EMD in clinical research to promote adherence to clinical regimens and research protocols. Nonadherence in transplant patients has been linked to late acute rejection and graft loss. High levels of adherence (97.7 %) were documented for six renal transplant recipients for a mean of 6 months (M=196.1±71.2 days) who indicated acceptance of the technology. MEMS data confirmed the feasibility of using wireless EMDs to monitor medication use. Monitoring provides greater assurance that research studies reflect the biological impact of medications and provide a basis for targeting adherence enhancement efforts within research investigations.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
