A earlier study (Viney & Patterson, 1969) provided comparative data on various budgetary and personnel support characteristics of 104 psychology departments offering graduate programs during the 1968-1969 academic year. Responses from numerous departmental chairmen indicated that the survey data had been used for faculty discussions, for planning purposes, and notably for providing strong rationale in sup-3 Requests for reprints should be sent to
Attitudes toward enforced school busing were studied among Blacks, Caucasians, and Chicanos in Denver, Colorado, in relation to six factors. Significant associations were found between type of attitude expressed and race, children enrolled in school, membership in PTA, expectation toward the quality of education to be obtained by busing, and home ownership. The number of contacts with the schools by the adult respondents was not related to attitudes toward busing. Supporters of busing emphasized the provision of equal educational opportunities for all children and improved communication among ethnic groups while those opposed to busing emphasized the disruption of the neighborhood school concept as the bases for their attitudes. Issues related to the implementation of the plan were considered.
surveys have been conducted to assess the budgetary and personnel support levels of psychology departments that offer graduate programs. Results of the first two surveys have appeared in previous issues of the American Psychologist (Patterson & Viney, 1971;Viney & Patterson, 1969). The twofold purpose of the present article is to present a summary of the 1970-1971 survey data, but more importantly to present an analysis of support changes which have occurred during the past three years. Such an analysis should be informative to the many departments which have felt the effects of recent budgetary restrictions but have had little or no basis for comparing their situation with that of other departments. Each of the three surveys was initiated each year with a cover letter and a questionnaire which were sent to the chairmen of psychology departments in the United States which offer graduate programs. Confidentiality of responses was emphasized to assure anonymity of individual departments. The number of departments which responded during the three academic years was 104, 152, and 149, respectively. Since the samples changed somewhat from year to year, a decision was made to present data only from those departments which responded all three years. However, close inspection of the data based on the sample of 59 departments which responded all three years compared with the data from the total sample revealed high agreement between the two samples regarding the direction of
