Abstract:The title of this study is, "An Analysis of Figurative Languages Used in Paulo Coelho's novel Entitled "The Alchemist". The objectives of the study are to describe the types of the figurative language found in the book and to identify the contextual meaning of the figurative language. The method used in collecting the data related to the subject of this research is documentation method because the researcher collected the data from novel. This study was conducted by collecting any relevant data and information about the topic or problem of the study from novels and internet that are available for the analysis. The data collection used the following steps: reading the novel, and then selecting the data that used the types of figurative language. While the steps to analyze the data are identifying the types of figurative language according to Leech, identifying the contextual meaning of the figurative language, and the last is interpreting the data.The result shows that there are 70 sentences that have figurative language. From all the sentences, there are 30 items or 42.9% of simile, 27 items or 38.6% of personification, 12 items or 17.1% of metaphor, and 1 item or 1.4% of hyperbole. It can be indicated that the dominant type of figurative language in the novel is simile. The author uses simile to explain circumstances, to describe the characters, to express emotion of the characters, and to make his writing more vivid and entertaining. It can be concluded that figurative language has important roles in this novel. That's why the author used so many sentences that have figurative language in this novel. Using figurative language makes the novel more interesting to read, and helps the readers to imagine the story, the character based on the illustration that the author has already given in the story. Language can be used to express someone's feelings or emotion and expressing their ideas, their thoughts and their imaginations, that can be speaking or writting. Written language can be found in the novel, newspaper, poem, and magazine. While, spoken language can be found in the song, speech, and conversation. As human beings, we cannot separate ourselves from social communication and interaction, which certainly makes ourselves live must have language.In linguistics, the study about meaning is called semantics. Semantics is one of linguistics branches, which explains about language meaning, or it can be said that meaning the most important thing in studying semantics term. This research was aimed at developing and validating English learning materials for students of computer network engineering of Vocational High School (VHS) at peripheral city of Indonesia.� This study followed the Research and Development (R&D) method. It involved three experts in the field of English instruction, ten students and one English teacher of Vocational High School (VHS) Teladan Metro, Lampung which was considered as a peripheral part of Indonesia. The research data were drawn from questionnaire distributed to the students, an interview conducted to the English teacher, and the developed materials which had been validated by the experts. The findings of the research show: (1) the development of English learning materials for computer networking should be centred around the students� learning needs; (2) a prompting visuals aspect and a clear map of the course book are what make the developed course book more acceptable, and (3) experts validation of the developed course book enhances its readability and acceptability. It is recommended that English teachers of VHS would design their own supplementary learning materials as the nation-wide use materials might not cover all of the students� learning needs.
This research aimed to identify and to describe about the students’ problem when they speak English. Because the advanced level Student of University couldn’t speak English well when they perform their Proposal Seminar and also final examination at Institut Agama Islam Negeri Metro Lampung. The data were taken by interview with 20 students, and questionnaire. The participants were students of English study program. The result showed that most students from advanced level student couldn’t speak English well when they presented seminar proposal and final examination or munaqosyah. Because they were too worry about making mistakes on their performance and because they don’t have enough vocabulary and grammar mstery so it would give impact to their pronunciation and confidence. The purpose of teaching English as a foreign language is learners are able use it both in spoken and written language, as well as understand the culture of the target language. Cultural material is seen as important as a learning medium to improve language skills, cultural understanding, and appreciation for diversity. English textbooks carried two important missions, namely language and cultural learning media. This study explores cultural materials in two English textbooks in Kota Metro - Indonesia as a city of education. The research used qualitative approach with content analysis technique. The research object was seven English textbooks used in high schools. Data analysis is done descriptively used Miles and Huberman model. The findings as follow: (1) The cultural materials were divided into three types of source information. (2) The culture materials were mostly presented into text rather than audio-visual. (3) There were four elements of culture in English textbooks: products, persons practices, and perspectives. The cultural materials can create students who have character, moral values who then live and interact in multicultural society.
Communication’s objective is to deliver information from one person to another. People adapt their communication in everyday life in order to attain the purpose of communication. It can be shown which features of convergence mostly appeal appear communication-related to the reason for it. The aim of this study is to analyze the English convergence in speaking skills among the eleventh-grade students at senior high school in Lampung Tengah, Indonesia. It is especially interested in analyzing the most dominant feature of convergence and why the students have it when speaking English. In this study, a qualitative method using a case study approach was applied. The participants were chosen from a group of sixteen eleventh graders. A classroom observations sheet and interview session were used to collect the data. The result of the study shows that the most dominant feature of convergence in speaking skills among the eleventh graders at senior high school in Lampung Tengah, Indonesia is Utterance Length. Utterance length involves Listening and Clarifying. All students certainly listen to the interlocutor and are speechless while clarifying. Secondly, the reason for the eleventh graders at senior high school in Lampung Tengah, Indonesia apply convergence is to be attracted by others and evoke social status.
