We investigated the hypothesis that resistance to deoxynivalenol (DON) is a major resistance factor in the Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance complex of wheat. Ninety-six double haploid lines from a cross between 'CM-82036' and 'Remus' were examined. The lines were tested for DON resistance after application of the toxin in the ear, and for resistances to initial infection and spread of FHB after artificial inoculation with Fusarium spp. Toxin application to flowering ears induced typical FHB symptoms. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses detected one locus with a major effect on DON resistance (logarithm of odds = 53.1, R2 = 92.6). The DON resistance phenotype was closely associated with an important FHB resistance QTL, Qfhs.ndsu-3BS, which previously was identified as governing resistance to spread of symptoms in the ear. Resistance to the toxin was correlated with resistance to spread of FHB (r = 0.74, P < 0.001). In resistant wheat lines, the applied toxin was converted to DON-3-O-glucoside as the detoxification product. There was a close relation between the DON-3-glucoside/DON ratio and DON resistance in the toxin-treated ears (R2 = 0.84). We conclude that resistance to DON is important in the FHB resistance complex and hypothesize that Qfhs.ndsu-3BS either encodes a DON-glucosyl-transferase or regulates the expression of such an enzyme.
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a destructive disease of wheat. The objective of this study was to characterise the FHB resistance of the Brazilian spring wheat cultivar Frontana through molecular mapping. A population of 210 doubled-haploid lines from a cross of Frontana (partially resistant) and Remus (susceptible) was evaluated for FHB resistance during three seasons. Spray and single-spikelet inoculations were applied. The severity, incidence and spread of the disease were assessed by visual scoring. The population was genotyped with 566 DNA markers. The major QTL effect associated with FHB resistance mapped to chromosome 3A near the centromere, explaining 16% of the phenotypic variation for disease severity over 3 years. The most likely position is in the Xgwm720-Xdupw227 interval. The genomic region on 3A was significantly associated with FHB severity and incidence in all years evaluated, but not with FHB spread, indicating the prominent contribution of this QTL to resistance against initial infection. The map interval Xgwm129-Xbarc197 on chromosome 5A also showed consistent association with FHB severity and accounted for 9% of the phenotypic variation. In addition, smaller effects for FHB severity were identified on chromosomes 1B, 2A, 2B, 4B, 5A and 6B in single years. Individual QTLs for resistance to FHB spread accounted for less than 10% of the variation in trait expression. The present study indicates that FHB resistance of Frontana primarily inhibits fungal penetration (type I resistance), but has a minor effect on fungal spread after infection (type II resistance).
The cereal cyst nematode Heterodera latipons Franklin is widespread in the eastern Mediterranean area and often occurs in mixed populations with H. avenae in cereal cropping systems. Differences between the two species in hatching behaviour and development cycle may be factors responsible for the low level of detection of H. latipons in the region. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different temperature regimes, agro-ecosystem, sampling date, cyst age and barley root diffusate on the hatching behaviour of H. latipons and its life cycle. The investigations were conducted by observing hatch and development under both field and glasshouse conditions. The optimum temperature for hatching was 10 • C. The hatched second-stage juveniles of H. latipons from the dry and wet agro-ecological zones are found in the soil from December to April with peak densities in January and February. Thirty to 45% of the eggs of both populations from the dry and wet zone hatch slowly over the growing season. The results of hatching tests, simulating pre-planting soil temperatures in Syria, indicate that treatment for 16 days at 5 • C initiates the hatching cycle of H. latipons. There was no significant difference in total hatch when cysts were placed in tap water or in barley root diffusates.

This paper reports on the IAEA's Consultancy Meeting on "lowdose radiation for patients and population -Science, Technology and Society (STS) concepts for communication and perception among medical doctors and stakeholders-", which was held on October 21 and 22, 2020. The meeting consisted of seven presentation sessions, with a total of 27 presentations and 39 participants from seven countries. The meeting focused on various areas including environmental, food, and personal dosimetry ; radiation and other secondary health effects after nuclear disasters ; communication between medical professionals and patients or residents ; and medical education on nuclear accidents. This meeting was convened to discuss STS perspectives related to nuclear emergencies, to share the findings of the Fukushima Health Management Survey and the current situation in Fukushima with international experts. The meeting confirmed the importance of coordinated recovery of affected areas and global preparedness in the aftermath of nuclear accidents.
