We describe Lonchophylla orcesi, sp. nov., from the Chocó, a region of high biotic diversity, endemism, and rainfall along the western Andean slopes and Pacific lowlands of Colombia and Ecuador. One of the largest known Lonchophylla, it occurs sympatrically with at least two other species of Lonchophylla including the similar, but somewhat smaller L. robusta. We also recognize L. concava as a Middle American Province species distinct from L. mordax of Brazil and Bolivia on the basis of cranial and dental features.
We describe and compare field recordings of echolocation calls of the neotropical emballonurid sac-winged bats Balantiopteryx plicata, B. iD, and B. infusca. These 3 species have search-phase calls with principal energy in the 2nd harmonic, characterized by a long narrowband component followed by a short broadband component. Variation in call parameters follows only partially the scaling pattern with body size generally found in bats. Based on characteristics of their echolocation calls, we hypothesize that B. io and B. infusca forage in more c1uttered habitats than does the congeneric B. plicata, which typically hunts in oren arcas.
This international journal is issued in volumes of 4 numbes (of about 64 pages each), not more than ORevolume being published annually. It deals with the ecology, systematics and distribution oPthe neotropical fauna. It was originally published with the title Beitrage zur neotropischen Fauna (Vols. 1-6) and Studies on the Neotropical Fauna (Vols. 7-10). Alle correspondence regarding subscriptions should be sent to the publishers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
