I ntroductionUp to and including 2001, five Research Assessment Exercises (RAEs) have taken place, and the RAE now forms a regular event in the UK academic calendar. The RAEs have had a profound effect on the funding of university research, and the relationship between quality and quantitative indicators of research performance has been a constant source of debate.
