Professor Myron Korduba’s (1876 – 1947) creative contribution into geography of science and culture of Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic (UkrSSR) from the day of its formation and until the 1930s is disclosed. Development and allocation of scientific establishments of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, as well as the same of the republican archives, museums and libraries was highlighted through Prof. M. Korduba’s eye. Preconditions and details of accelerated growth of Ukrainian scientific movement at the beginning of post-revolution time in Ukrainian SSR are cleared up, as well as territorial specificities for the same are presented, namely, the availability of scientific Ukrainian associations outside the borders of Russia; a significant number of outstanding Ukrainian scientists in the Tsarist Russia itself; participation of representatives of different- ethnicity authors living on the territory of Ukraine in Ukrainian-language publications Three stages in brief history of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences are outlined and characterized as follows: 1918-1923 – the stage of formation; 1923-the last quarter of 1930 – full-scale development; and, the end of 1930 – the period of persecution and repressions of the members of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences; consolidation of “communist” science on the basis of Marxist-Leninist methodology. The activity of three departments within the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences is highlighted, namely, I. Historic-Philosophic; II. Physic-Mathematic; and, III. Social-Economic. Each of these had its own sections and boards to prepare a series or even several series of publications. Among the most distinctive collections of expressly geographical content, Myron Korduba outlined the “Historic-Geographic Series (1927; 4 volumes edited by the Board for Compilation of Geographical Dictionary of Ukraine); “Materials of the Seminar for the Study of National Economy of Ukraine” (from 1926), “Writings of Demographic Institute” (from 1924), “Transactions of Social-Economic Department of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences” (from 1923, 6 volumes), “Collection of Works by Social-Economic Department of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences” (from 1925, 35 issues). An essential portion of attention was given by Prof. Myron Korduba to institutes, associations and establishments affiliated and closely connected with the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Among these, there was National Library of Ukraine in Kyiv, Institute for Ukrainian Scientific Language, Kyiv and Odesa Boards for Regional Studies. The scientist had assessed the activity of 52 self-employed scientific departments, institutes and associations close to Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. The most important of them, to Prof. Myron Korsuba’s opinion, was the group of institutes for public education that published their “Writings”, i.e., Volyns’kyy in Zhytomyr, those in Dnipropetrovs’k, Kamyanets’-Podil’skyy, Kyiv, Luhansk, Nizhyn, Odesa, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Kherson. Of great importance and interest is the scientist’s information on archiving in Ukrainian SSR as of the beginning of the 1930s. Prof. Korduba distinguished between three classes of archives in the republic, namely, 1. Central; 2. Land (oblast); and 3. District (rayon) archives, and presented the map of territorial disposition of the same in the Soviet republic. Specificities of territorial organization of 95 republican museums are disclosed, where 19 were national-level museums, 54 – regional and district, 6 were associated with the Academy of Sciences and the Commissariat for Public Education, and 15 – with the other establishments. Myron Korduba brought special thoroughness to assessment of heritage available in 28 libraries of Ukrainian SSR. In particular, the scientist scrupulously characterized territorial differences in librarian funds and the number of visitors, while his analysis of bibliographic editions and of bibliographical science of is a unique study of the achievements of the Ukrainian Soviet republic. Prof. Myron Korduba’s assessment of the development of science and culture in the Ukrainian SSR is presented with a breakdown into every rayon of the republic and bears an expressly geographic aspect. Specificities of and major results in preparation of specialists-managers at the Faculty of Geography of the Chernivtsi Yuriy Fedkovych National University within 1996-2021 are disclosed. It is now 2221 graduates qualified as managers, inclusive of 1146 bachelors, 731 specialists, and 344 masters (regular and distant forms of education). It is accentuated on five principal periods in the development of managerial specialty at the Faculty of Geography within 1996-2001, namely, 2001-2006, 2006-2011, 2011-2016, and 2016-2021. The first period (1996 – 2001) was distinctive for preparation of the first wave under bachelor, specialist and manager/master programs, and resulted in graduation of 91 qualified men and women (nearly 4% out of total graduates). The second period (2001 – 2006) was remarkable for graduation of 464 managers (20,9% out of all in the whole 25-years period). Diplomas of managers within the third period (2006 – 2011) were awarded to 980 (44%) graduates of the Faculty of Geography of the Chernivtsi Yuriy Fedkovych National University, and it has become the most resultative period in the history of manager preparation at the Faculty of Geography. The fourth five-year period (2011–2016) gave 483 more managers (21,7%). And, finally, in 2016–2021, the faculty prepared 203 more specialists (9,1%). The absolute figures of bachelors, specialists and managers/masters prepared at the Faculty of Geography of the Chernivtsi Yuriy Fedkovych National University were shown in 2010 (246 graduates, or 11% within the 25-year period of preparation), 2008 – 210 (9,5%), and 2007 – 186 (8,4%). At the same time, 2017 and 2019 were the years when the least number of specialists were prepared (36 and 38 respectively), which is in the first place connected with cancellation of “specialist” level in the system of higher education in Ukraine. Major results of and problems in educational, scientific, upbringing and practical activity/cooperation of the department’s staff, lecturers, students and graduates/managers are summed up to contribute to further development of managerial sphere of national economics of Ukraine. Keywords: graduates-managers, Faculty of Geography, Chernivtsi Yuriy Fedkovych National University.
Professor Myron Korduba (1876–1947), an outstanding Ukrainian scientist, is among the most essential contributors to the development of historic, economic, geographical and toponymic sciences. In said areas, he prepared and published over 450 scientific works, and a great portion of these is found as the author’s handwriting is still little known to contemporaries. “Pivnichno-Zakhidna Ukraina” (North-Western Ukraine), Myron Korduba’s monograph, published in Vienna in 1917, was among the author’s most fundamental works. The work focused (over one-third of it) on the exposure of regional-economic problems of agricultural and economical development within these lands that covered the part of Horodnenska Province, the south-western part of Mynsk Province, historical Volyn and Holmshchyna. The work aims at Myron Korduba’s highlighting major regional-economic problems of development of agriculture and economy in North-Western Ukraine on the eve of World War I and still little known to present-day scientists. Doctor Myron Korduba deeply and comprehensively analyzed regional-economic problems of agricultural and economic development in North-Western Ukraine. Territorial differentiation in the structure of land use was disclosed. Regional differences in land distribution between their owners were established. The land value within a group of private owners was estimated. Productivity of plant growing, a principal branch of farming in the region, was thoroughly analyzed as well as perspectives of its development were given an outline. A distressing conclusion was made with respect to the significant backwardness of cattle breeding in North-Western Ukraine on a general European level. The authors had formulated economic development problems of the region. Among others were the following: poor mineral resources; the significant difference in the industrial development of regional provinces and districts; the processing of plant and cattle food, woodcrafts and forest economy comprised 4/5 of overall production under the sectoral structure. The prevalence of small firms in the structure of the regional economy, and low costs of annual per capita production were essential specificities of the regional development. Materials of the article can be used for lecturing either general or specialized courses in economic history and regional economics. Overall assessment of Professor Myron Korduba’s creative heritage.
Professor Myron Korduba’s (1876–1947) contribution to geographical studies of Ukrainian toponymy is highlighted. The scientist accentuated that the local folk pronunciation should be the basis and the prerequisite of the authenticity of different forms of geographical names. According to the “Dictionary of Ukrainian Language”, toponymy is a “set of geographical names of settlements, mountains, plains, lakes, rivers, forests, etc. certain territory” (Білодід та ін., 1979). Professor’s “Materialy do geografichnogo slovnyka Halychyny i Bukovyny” (“Materials to geographical vocabulary of Galicia and Bukovyna”) available with the section of manuscripts of Vasyl Stefanyk Lviv National Scientific Library are given scrupulous analysis. Said materials contain as follows the alphabetical index of vocabulary positions, materials to the collection of topographical names, map of settled localities, toponymic descriptions collected by different people. The whole variety of geographical names of the Galician and Bukovynian settlements is reduced to three “big communities”: names that possess regional nature; names that originate from proper names; other (smaller) groups of names. The regional names of settlements are characterized by such attributes as their appearance, local specificity, disposition with respect to the suburb, hydrographical specificity, soil quality, means of communication, plant (flora) or animal (fauna) specificities. The proper names of settlements possess nominative or adjectival “appearances” as follows: nominative names ending in -ичі, -иці; adjectival names ending in -ь, -ів, -ин; nominative names ending in -івці, -инці; nominative names ending in -івка. The other (smaller) groups of settlement names include colonization, fortification (defensive), occupational, newcomer encouragement, forest, church, tavern, jocular and habitation names. It is substantiated that geographical names of settlements, rivers, mountains, forests, etc. should be presented as used by the local population. It is stated that M. Korduba organized and collected the organization and collection of rich material to the geographical dictionary of Galicia and Bukovina, which includes topographic names, maps and dialectal names of their settlements; developed a detailed classification of geographical names of settlements in Galicia and Bukovina has been developed, covering three main “communities” (local history, personal and others) and 21 “smaller” groups of names of settlements.Key words: professor Myron Korduba, geographical studies of settlements, Ukrainian toponymy.
