E-learning has numerous potentials to spur education development in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It impacts positively on the educational process, unlike the physical chalkboard in the classrooms. The outbreak and fast spread of the COVID-19 led to the closed down of schools. Efforts to revamp education due to prolong lockdown made the government enforce e-learning in tertiary institutions across the country. It is however worthy to know that these directives did not make much change as a result of poor infrastructure and networking. Hence, this study investigated compliance with e-learning during COVID-19 pandemic lockdown by the instructors in the private tertiary institutions in Nigeria visa -vis their socioeconomic factors and limitations encountered. A systematic sampling technique was adopted to select 180 respondents from the staff list. A validated questionnaire was used to collect data on socioeconomic variables (SEV), compliance (ϒ) to e-learning, and limitations (Ls) while multiple linear regression model (R) was used to test the interaction between the compliance and limitations. Results show that age (β ¼ 0.351), educational attainment (β ¼ 0.843) and teaching experience (β ¼ 0.169) influence e-learning compliance at p < 0.05. It was also found that 67.3% compliance with e-learning took place in the Universities compared to 59.1% in the Polytechnics and 52.8% in the Colleges of Education. Regression shows that constraints affected the level of compliance (R 2 ¼ 0.73). The study concludes that constraints are major obstacles to the compliance and prospects of e-learning in the Private Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.
The study examined factors affecting rice farming practices of rural farmers in Ogun and Niger States, Nigeria. Three hundred and twenty respondents were selected through multistage sampling procedure. Frequency distribution, percentages and mean, student’s t-test and regression analysis were used for data. All analysis was done at 5% level of significance. There was a significant difference in the farm practices of the rice farmers in Niger and Ogun States (t = 8.39, p ≤0.05). Factor affecting rice farming practices was determinants of rice production output (β = -0.13, p ≤0.05). There was difference in the farming practices of rice farmers in Ogun and Niger States. Agricultural extension services, particularly, in Ogun State should expedite action in organizing training that can facilitate adoption of better farming practices in order to increase rice production and income generation for the rice farmers, while government and input suppliers should make fertilizers available and affordable. This study was born out of the underuse of ICT in teachers' education coupled with the resulting lack of technical knowledge pertaining to integrating these tools in the teaching-learning process. Hence, this study was carried out to assess the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching profession in Ogun State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 90 Student-teachers in Federal College of Education, Abeokuta as sample size for this study. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). Result of the findings showed that the mean age of the respondents was 30.2 years. Most (60.0%) of the respondents were females and married. The average teaching experience was 4.2 years. Above 70% of the respondents did not possess Laptop, Desktop, Tablet, Modem and I-pads hence, they did not use ICT for lesson note write up and teaching in the class. Myriads of problems such as high cost of ICT facilities and equipment, inadequate training and seminar on ICT, epileptic power supply and poor network service by network providers affected the efficient use of ICT by the Student-teachers. Significant relationship existed between personal characteristic of the respondents and use of ICT in teaching profession at p < 0.05. The study concludes that younger teachers have great potential to the use of ICT in teaching profession. It is hereby recommends that the use of ICT for teaching and learning in Nigeria schools should be encouraged while teachers must receive in-service training to be able to comply with ICT usage and perform effectively in their teaching profession which will ultimately be of benefit to the students.
Postharvest losses of tomato pose serious threat on the economic viability of actors in the tomato production chain in Nigeria. Therefore, postharvest losses of tomato among marketers in Ibadan Metropolis of Oyo State Nigeria were investigated by the researchers. One hundred and twenty tomato marketers were chosen from the five food markets in Ibadan metropolis through a simple random sampling technique. The study adopted linear regression and descriptive statistics to analyze data. The outcomes of the investigation show that females were 92.5% and 88.3% were married. Capital is primarily raised through cooperative societies (57.5%). Postharvest losses of tomato accounted for 18.9% of purchase which represents ₦124,800/day. The major causes of PHLs are poor packaging (100%) and poor storage (100%) by the tomato marketers. Meanwhile, all the respondents (100%) adopted sorting to reduce PHLs of tomato. The regression analysis showed that education has a significant effect to reduce PHLs of tomato. The study concluded that huge postharvest and monetary losses of tomato are experienced by the tomato marketers. The study recommends provision of quality postharvest handling education to tomato marketers as a way of reducing PHLs of tomato in Ibadan.
