Type I error rates were estimated for three tests that compare means by using data from two independent samples: the independent samples t test, Welch’s approximate degrees of freedom test, and James’s second-order test. Type I error rates were estimated for skewed distributions, equal and unequal variances, equal and unequal sample sizes, and a range of total sample sizes. Welch’s test and James’s test have very similar Type I error rates and tend to control the Type I error rate as well or better than the independent samples t test does. The results provide guidance about the total sample sizes required for controlling Type I error rates.
Within the limitations of this study, high usages and ownerships of smartphones were found amongst the students surveyed. The individually designed virtual 3D instructional models as supplemental teaching materials in the pre-clinical course were perceived positively by the students.
Previous research has shown that people use warmth and competence as basic dimensions to evaluate others and to interpret their behavior, but little research has examined the conditions under which low-warmth targets are liked. A series of 3 experiments involving 4 vignettes showed, in general, that low-warmth targets were better liked when they exhibited higher competence and that high-status persons displayed greater tolerance toward the low-warmth person of low status. Exceptions to these patterns were predicted and found as a function of the type of organizational context in which evaluations were made: groups that place priority on individual goals over common goals and groups that are performance oriented rather than relationship oriented. Target gender interacted with competence and relative status.
