The authors are thankful to Bijankhan and Ferro for their discussion. We should point out that the original paper was an attempt to have a preliminary look at the surface hydraulic jumps. The depth y 1 in the original paper is indeed the perpendicular depth of the stream or jet just before the jump and it is not the vertical depth as shown in Fig. 3, the definition sketch, which is an unfortunate error. The angle of this stream with the horizontal varied from about 10°to 30°. The reason we used only one height for the weir in the experiments is because Wu and Rajaratnam (1996) have shown that the submerged flow regimes are not affected by the height of the weir over a wide range. It is interesting to find that the results of the discussers on the relative energy loss are at least approximately described by the empirical equation proposed in the original paper.References Wu, S., and N. The analyzing power for quasi-free nucleon-nucleon scattering has been found to differ substantially from that for the free interaction. This medium modification was first noticed in inclusive scattering experiments. In the present work, it has been demonstrated that kinematically complete exclusive measurements are capable of demonstrating this effect more clearly. This advantage arises by virtue of the possibility of selecting nucleons bound in states localized in the nuclear interior
