Conventional supported heterogeneous palladium catalysts in combination with a dicyanamide based ionic liquid are highly active with excellent selectivity in enabling the one-pot synthesis of citronellal through citral hydrogenation.
Terpenes U 0200The Promoting Effect of a Dicyanamide Based Ionic Liquid in the Selective Hydrogenation of Citral. -A dicyanamide-based ionic liquid improves the hydrogenation of citral (I) to citronellal (II) in a way which has not been observed with other ones yet. The consecutive hydrogenation of (II) to dihydrocitronellal is strongly inhibited by the ionic liquid leading to a selectivity of >99% at full conversion. The best results are achieved using a Pd catalyst coated with ionic liquid. -(ARRAS, J.; STEFFAN, M.; SHAYEGHI, Y.; CLAUS*, P.; Chem. Commun. (Cambridge) 2008, 34, 4058-4060; Ernst-Berl Inst., Tech. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
