Aim The International Endodontic Journal (IEJ) has served as a platform for research and clinical practice in Endodontics since 1967. This study provides a bibliographic analysis and overview of the publications that have appeared in the IEJ from 1967 to 2020. Methodology A literature search was performed in Elsevier's Scopus database to locate all the publications of the International Endodontic Journal. Various bibliometric software packages including the open‐source visualization software Gephi and Biblioshiny (version 2.0) were employed for data visualization and analysis. Results A total of 3739 records with citation and bibliographic details were selected and retrieved to allow a bibliometric analysis to be performed. The bibliometric analysis indicates that the IEJ has grown both in terms of productivity and influence. Over time, the journal has been associated with an increase in the number of manuscripts published and the citations they have attracted, but with minor downward fluctuations in citations in the last few years. Bibliographic coupling of the IEJ articles revealed that the major research themes published in the journal include ‘endodontics’, ‘root canal treatment’, ‘calcium hydroxide’, ‘apical periodontitis’, ‘mineral trioxide aggregate’, ‘microbiology’, ‘cyclic fatigue’, ‘cone‐beam computed tomography’ and ‘micro‐computed tomography’. Authors affiliated to institutions in the UK were the major contributors to the journal and were linked with other countries such as Brazil, USA and Malaysia. The largest number of publications were from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Conclusion The IEJ is one of the leading journals in Endodontology and has been providing a platform for innovative research and clinical reports for more than 50 years. Publications have been associated with a wide range of authors, institutions and countries around the world.
This study aimed to investigate the current state of research on antibacterial dental adhesives. The interest in this field can be drawn from an increasing number of scholarly works in this area. However, there is still a lack of quantitative measurement of this topic. The main aim of this study was to consolidate the research published on the antibacterial adhesive from 1996 to 2020 in Web of Science indexed journals. The bibliometric method, a quantitative study of investigating publishing trends and patterns, was used for this study. The result has shown that a gradual increase in research was found, whereby a substantial increase was observed from 2013. A total of 248 documents were published in 84 journals with total citations of 5107. The highly cited articles were published mainly in Q1 category journals. Most of the published articles were from the USA, China, and other developed countries; however, some developing countries contributed as well. The authorship pattern showed an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach among researchers. The thematic evaluation of keywords along with a three-factor analysis showed that ‘antibacterial adhesives’ and ‘quaternary ammonium’ have been used commonly. This bibliometric analysis can provide direction not only to researchers but also to funding organizations and policymakers.
Aim This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of carious, restored, and missing teeth among diabetic and non-diabetic patients who visited dental clinics in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Method This retrospective study was conducted between April and November 2018. The data collection procedure was conducted in two steps: (1) review of patient records for the demographic variables and (2) screening of digital panoramic radiographs (OPGs). The patients who visited the restorative and prosthetic clinics in the period of 2016–2017 were included in the study. Results A total of 1186 patient records and OPGs were reviewed to extract the data. The average age of the patients in the study sample was 40.96 (±16.29). The sample included 751 (63.3%) female and 435 (36.7%) male patients. Among the patients, 192 (16.2%) had diabetes mellitus and 994 (83.8%) were non-diabetic. The average numbers of fixed partial dentures and missing teeth were significantly high among diabetic patients ( P < 0.001). Conversely, the average numbers of carious lesions and restored teeth were higher among the non-diabetic patients. Only the number of restored teeth was found to be significant ( P < 0.001). Conclusion The diabetic patients were found to be at high risk of losing teeth compared with the non-diabetic patients. The prevalence of fixed partial dentures was also higher among diabetic patients. The oral health status of dental patients with diabetes needs urgent attention to prevent these patients from having teeth loss, and it can be done by improving their oral health.
The experimental bioactive sealers were synthesized by incorporating fluoridated-nano-bioactive glass (F-nBG; 2.5 and 5wt%) in AH Plus ® (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany) sealer and denoted as AH-FBG2.5 and AH-FBG5, respectively. Structural pattern, setting time, flowability, and water sorption analysis were performed. The fluoride release behavior was evaluated periodically over the course of 40 days using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. For sealing ability, post-extraction single-rooted teeth were obturated with sealers. The percentage of voids and sealing ability were evaluated periodically using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) followed by push-out bond strength. The Fourier transform infrared spectra showed a change in peak height with an increase in the concentration of fillers. The setting time, flowability, and water sorption of experimental groups were within the acceptable clinical range. The fluoride release, sealing ability, and bond strength of experimental sealers were significantly high. The experimental sealers have potential to overcome sealing ability issues of sealers.
The objectives were to synthesize urethane grafted nano-apatite in shortest possible time duration using the microwave irradiation method and to utilize them for synthesis of experimental dental adhesives. The structural, morphological, thermal, and mechanical behavior of synthesized grafted nano-apatite were investigated. Then, these grafted nano-apatite particles were incorporated in various concentrations that is, 5wt.%, 10wt.%, and 15wt.% into dimethacrylate resins to develop bioactive adhesives. The weight measurement analysis in deionized water and phosphate buffer saline, Knoop micro-hardness, and degree of conversion were evaluated. The bacterial adhesion was investigated with Streptococcus mutans at 6h, 24h, and 48h. Statistical analysis was conducted using one-way ANOVA. The urethane dimethacrylate was successfully grafted on the nano-apatite surface and spectroscopic analysis confirmed the presence of urethane and phosphate peaks. An inverse relationship was found in both media between the concentration of grafted fillers and weight loss. No significant difference was observed in the micro-hardness and degree of conversion among the groups, whereby the degree of conversion for all groups was in the range of 83% to 86%. The mean number of bacterial colonies was significantly lower in the 15wt.% group compared to 5wt.% and 10wt.%. The grafted nano-apatite presented favorable results for adhesive resin incorporation, where 15wt.% group comparatively showed superior results than other groups.
