The legislative corrupt practices have become one of the most widely concept among social scientists, whenever the issue of democratic consolidation and development are discussed (Olutola & Isaac, 2016). In Nigeria, the involvement of the legislature in the corrupt practices has led to the loss of the citizen confidence in the political system, because they considered legislative members as corrupt representatives that are no longer adhere strictly to the due process and the rule of law. The legislature has been severally indicted for the corrupt practices in Nigeria, as they are often involved in accepting bribe for the passing of appropriation bills or awarding of contracts for selfish interest (Otusanya, 2010). This is an aberration in the democracy, since the legislature as it has been argued, are very significant institution of curving antisocial problems through their role of legislation and oversight function (Stapenhurst et al., 2006; Oyewo, 2007). Surprisingly, the institution which is constitutionally offered with the responsibility of curbing corruption, is itself not immune from the practice (Alabi & Fashagba, 2010). Corrupt practices in the representatives of the citizen can affect the process of democratic consolidation, since it may hinder and rob their moral ground to challenge the executive members that are engaged in the corrupt practices. Consolidation entails both the eradication of the residue of dictatorial system that is incompatible with the practice of the democratic regime and establishment of mechanism
According to Chatura, (2018) Organizations are highly complex systems composed of many different levels of analysis including human activities. Therefore, the need to examine these human behavioral patterns and their possible implications to aid the development of any organization can be considered vital to all concerned.Employee motivation is one of the complex phenomena, with individual differences, perception, needs, desires, motivation too differs base on individualism.Be that as it might, Creating and maintaining a sustainable org a niza tion require an understanding of the role of leadership in harnessing and addressing the aims and objective of employees. This may include 'Happiness and Contentment' also meaningful life and subjective well-being is of utmost c o n c e r n for all organizations. Meaningful life makes one's life purposeful and subjective well-being is about being happy; these are important dimensions of everyone's life, and people expect work organizations to contribute toward that effect. To realize these objectives, leadership plays a critical role in that direction, hence, the styles of leadership exhibited by the leader determine to the large extend the commitment of the employee to the organization. This is in consonant to the study conducted by Nwokocha & Iheriohanma (2015) the study reveals that when management styles are considered repugnant by the subordinates, they undermine employees' performance and instigate their propensity to quit the organization, and vice versa. Therefore, the amelioration of growth within the business organizations requires a clear adoption of methods that can effectively attract efficient people and can be effectively retained as well (Chitra, N., & Munivenkatappa 2017). This means Leadership style is a powerful weapon that can be used to win the war of talents as well as their retention in order to reduce or avoid costs associated with replacing the employee. In this context, studies show that employees do not solely leave the organization; they rather leave poor leadership styles instead. This implies that there is a positive relationship between poor leadership style and employee sense of remorse towards the organization and eventually intention to leave the organization.Against this backdrop, this study seeks to investigate the effect of leadership style to be adopted that will trigger employee motivation consequently their retention in an organization. Employee turnover are a costly phenomenon for any type of business and organizations ought to avoid it through improving employee retention (
The study examines the role of social media and political participation among youth in southeastern Nigeria during the 2015-2019 general elections. Both primary and secondary data were used. The instruments used for data collection were a validated questionnaire and guided interview. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Against this backdrop the Public Sphere and Political Campaign Theory was adopted as a framework of analysis. The findings of the study show that the social media have a very crucial role to play in the promotion of accountability in any democratic society. It was also discovered that for twenty years now, the democratic journey has remained tortuous because of the reckless pursuits of power by the political class. It was concluded that the Nigerian social media need to overcome some of the above mentioned challenges that limit their performance as a credible institution entrusted with the role of serving as the watchdog of the society without flouting the media ethical standards and squander imperatives for objectivity. The study recommends a need to address good governance that would position fundamental governance and create an enabling environment for self-participation. Electorates should critically analyze the situation and make inquiries before voting for a candidate who will not bring about growth and development in the country.
The purpose of this study is manifold. Firstly, it determines the roles played by the legislature in performing its oversight function in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, from 1999 to 2019. Secondly and is a related purpose, it demonstrates how this function (oversight) has helped in democratic consolidation. Thirdly, it identifies the challenges of legislative oversight, and lastly, it adumbrates the implications of these challenges to democratization in the Nigerian politics. The Institutional agency theory propounded by Barry Mitnick is adopted in this paper as a framework of analysis. Hence, the study, which is basically empirical, generated the data from face-to-face interview using purposive sampling and case study research design. In doing so, the paper opines that for oversight function to strengthen democracy in Nigeria, the legislature should be financially autonomous and otherwise. Moreover, the degree of separation of powers should be improved and both the legislature and its staff should be trained frequently. Similarly, the paper concludes that there is need for the research improvement in the Nigerian National Assembly.
