Obesity is widely recognized as a major global health problem caused by a chronic energy imbalance resulting from a combination of excess caloric intake and insufficient energy expenditure. Excessive energy intake and physical inactivity are traditional risk factors for obesity. Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases, including hypertension, diabetes and tumours. Recent studies have found a strong link between ferroptosis and obesity. Ferroptosis is an iron‐dependent regulated cell death caused by iron overload and reactive oxygen species‐dependent excessive accumulation of lipid peroxidation. Ferroptosis is involved in many biological processes, such as amino acid metabolism, iron metabolism and lipid metabolism. Some potential strategies to reduce the adverse effects of ferroptosis on obesity are suggested and future research priorities are highlighted.
Objective To understand the related risk factors of occurrence and recurrence of hypertension and provide scientific basis for relevant departments to better guide prevention and control work. Methods From September 2017 to September 2018, a prospective follow‐up study was performed on patients with hypertension who visited the Second People's Hospital of Wuhu City, Anhui Province. Multivariate Cox regression was used to analyze influencing factors of stroke occurrence and recurrence in follow‐up of hypertensive patients. Results A total of 769 hypertensive patients were enrolled in this study. The average age of hypertensive patients was 65.66 ± 11.70 years old and the BMI index was 24.99 ± 4.17. In this study, 769 patients with hypertension were followed up for 1 year, and the incidence of stroke was 14.69%. This study found that higher levels of blood glucose (RR = 2.027, 95% CI: 1.195–3.438), HCY (RR = 5.928,95% CI: 1.438–24.440), aggravated extent of carotid artery stenosis (RR = 2.620, 95% CI: 1.532–4.481), and drinking (RR = 3.867, 95% CI: 2.038–7.339) were risk factors, and maintaining exercise (RR = 0.325, 95% CI: 0.117–0.907) was a protective factor for stroke occurrence; however, aggravated extent of carotid artery stenosis (RR = 3.158, 95% CI: 1.797–5.550) and smoking (RR = 2.271, 95% CI: 1.142–4.517) were risk factors for stroke recurrence for hypertensive patients. Conclusions For people with high blood pressure, it is necessary to exercise properly, control body weight, avoid obesity, quit smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, and reasonably control blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood lipid.
Dear editor, We are pleased to read an article entitled "Prevalence of subhealth status and its effects on mental health and smartphone addiction: a cross-sectional study among Chinese medical students" by Zhang et al. 1 . The findings of this study suggest that anxiety, depression, and smartphone addiction among Chinese medical students are associated with subhealth status. This study is of great significance in the prevention and treatment of the physical and mental health of medical students. However, in our opinion, there are some questions that are still unanswered and worth discussing. The main problem with this study is that Suboptimal Health Status Questionnaires-25 can only be used to assess suboptimal health status but not to diagnose suboptimal health status. Suboptimal health was defined in this study by a total subhealth status score ≥35, which is obviously subjective. Clearly, such diagnostic criteria for suboptimal health are not widely accepted by scientists. In fact, there are clear diagnostic criteria for suboptimal health 2 . According to the definition of subhealth, subjects with mental subhealth, overweight, prehypertension, pre-diabetes, serum blood lipids (triglycerides or total cholesterol) above the borderline high level, renal subhealth, hepatic subhealth, or thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances ≥5.09 μmol/L (based on the reference range of 95%) were categorized as subhealthy 2 .Another problem is that this study is a non-probabilistic sample (web-based questionnaire). Thus, the sample is not representative. The limitations of the article include the non-probability sampling technique and sampling structure that is limited to a single university. In addition, there are many factors that affect subhealth. For example, the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic can also have deleterious consequences on depression and anxiety of college students 3 .
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
