2018, № 11 53 UDC 025.4.03+002 Scientists' information needs and search for information (based on polling the researchers of Novosibirsk Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Siberian Branch)Researchers' information needs and information search issues are examined based on polling the researchers of Novosibirsk Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Siberian Branch. The polling was organized by the State Public Library for Science and Technology RAS SB. The answers related to information retrieval and difficulties the researchers are facing, were analyzed. It was found that the researchers regularly search information within their studies subject scope and, as a rule, made advanced users of different level information systems, and used independently the databases like Web of Science, Scopus, Russian Science Citation Index. However, some researchers experience difficulties in choosing resources for information sources or formulating queries. Based on the study findings, the authors propose several services to be demanded by researcher users, among them: analyzing dynamics of the document flow within specific topics and the most productive authors, retrospective subject search and assistance provided by bibliographic managers. Besides, the Library could provide information services for using archives and dealing with intellectual property issues.
The role and tasks of academic libraries are changing due to external factors, and among them is the atrophy of their function as the only information source. The authors analyze the survey of the Novosibirsk Scientific Center’s libraries related to the relevant services provided by academic libraries. The study goal is to determine the balance of traditional and innovated tasks being accomplished by the libraries. The idea of the survey was conceived in 2019 before the pandemic. In Part One, the authors describe the methods and methodology of their study. The key method is the survey questionnaire. The findings are analyzed and the conclusions are presented: to solve new problems (like establishing and maintaining the systems for monitoring researchers’ publication activity, maintenance of institutional data repository, preparation of reviews and analytical surveys, advocating institutes through social media, users support on copyright and plagiarism, consulting on grant selection and application), academic administration bring the expertise of librarians, or establish new structures; however, the librarians are insufficiently engaged in solving the new tasks of science support. The authors suggest that their findings reflect the activities of academic libraries, however after the pandemic, the situation may change with the world.
Popularization of science, promotion of research results, recognition and positive attitude to the brand of a scientific organization and individual researchers have been the subject of increased attention from research institutes and universities in recent years. They are one of the most important points of national science policy in Russia. Analysis of the effectiveness of the PR policy of organizations becomes a key task in these circumstances. The article provides an analysis of news stories in the mass media based on the results of scientific research of the institutions of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In the course of the study, key requirements for a news report on a scientific publication were determined and the most common errors when presenting results of research as newsworthy events were identified and listed. This study proposes a number of metrics for measuring the effectiveness of scientific organizations activities in the mass media. The calculated metrics make it possible to assess the overall level of organization activity in promoting research results in the media, the effectiveness of this activity from the point of view of the interest of the media to relevant news stories, the completeness of media coverage of research papers and active authors of the institution. The analysis of the media activity of research institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences has shown their growing interest in popularizing and promoting the brands of institutions, individual scientists and scientific results.
The present research aims to study modern approaches to the classification of news information in general, and of science news in particular. Based on the analysis of Russian scientific publications and information systems, several classifications used to systematize news (mostly universal) are described. The article proposes the author’s classification of scientific news as an element of modern scientific communication system. This classification can potentially be used as another tool for assessing the effectiveness of scientific institution research results.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
