The influence of residual moisture under a metal coating on strength and fatigue of silica optical fibers was investigated. It was shown that for the fabrication of metalcoated fibers with strength – 10 GPa and low static fatigue it is necessary that the water content in the atmosphere during the freezing process should be less than 40 ppm.
