Trachelospermum asiaticum, T. jasminoides var. pubescens and T. jasminoides var. jasminoides are commercially distributed in Japan. In this study, we analyzed these three lineages by RAPD in order to acquire taxon-specific RAPD markers. We found RAPD markers which could be used for identification of three lineages. Using these markers, Trachelospermum plants for landscape collected from nurseries were analyzed and identified. Variegated cultivars were also analyzed and the results suggested their origins. RAPD analysis indicated that non-native T. jasminoides var. pubescens is also commercially distributed in Japan. Furthermore, progenies of cultivated Trachelospermum plants were analyzed by RAPD. The taxon-specific markers indicated the possibility that natural hybridization between T. asiaticum and T. jasminoides var. pubescens, and between native and non-native T. jasminoides var. pubescens occurred.

In addition to wild species, cultivars of this genus are commercially distributed. However, the genetic relationship between cultivars and wild species is unknown and no comprehensive classification has been held regarding Trachelospermum cultivars. In this study, we compared the morphological characters of reproductive and vegetative organs between native species and 35 accessions of cultivars collected from nurseries and plant suppliers. As a result, those accessions were classified into six cultivars of adult T. asiaticum, two cultivars of juvenile T. asiaticum, two cultivars of adult T. jasminoides var. pubescens and five cultivars of juvenile T. jasminoides var. pubescens. From these results we clarified that there are some Trachelospermum cultivars given incorrect commercial names and it resulted in the confusion of their names in the green industry.
